The Nigerian Red Cross Society in Enugu State have sensitised women of Agulu, Umana community in Ezeagu Local Government Area (LGA) on safe pregnancy practices and hygiene promotion on the occasion of their just concluded annual August Conference.
Speaking during the exercise, the Health Coordinator of the Red Cross in the state, Mrs. Jessie Maduekwe admonished the women to imbibe the habit of good personal and environmental hygiene which she said is a “win for everyone except the germs.”
Maduekwe who further described safe motherhood as a time of expectation and joy for a woman, her family and the entire community stressed the need for expecting mothers to take good care of themselves during pregnancy by ensuring healthy nutritious diet and ante-natal care.
“Eating nutritious diet is very vital for women and their babies during pregnancy. It ensures that the woman and her baby stay healthy and it also reduces the risk of birth defects, she said.
The health coordinator added that ante-natal can detect and prevent early complications during pregnancy.
She said, “It is also important for expecting mothers to visit the hospital and health centres for ante-natal and routine checkup. This help prevent, identify and treat conditions that may threaten the health of the new born and the mother.”
While appreciating the Red Cross, the leader of the group Mrs. Anthonia Onwurah said it was an eye-opening encounter as most women in the community were ignorant of this all-important process.
“I want to commend the Red Cross for the good work they are doing especially in the rural areas. Today we have learnt alot about good hygiene and safe motherhood. In our community, majority of us have not been taking these practices serious but seeing how valuable it is, we will henceforth do the right thing,” Onwurah said.
The high point of the exercise was the distribution of washing soups and face masks to the women.
