Nigerian Man Sues Malaysia Govt N406m For Unlawful Detention

A Nigerian man identified as Simon Mamoh, has filed a N406 million suit against the Director-General of Malaysia Immigration Department, Khairul Dzaimee Daud, and three others for alleged unlawful detention and deportation. Mamoh alleges that Malaysian immigration department detained him illegally for 40 days before ordering his deportation from Malaysia to Nigeria. The Nigerian in a lawsuit filed in the High Court of Shah Alam on January 10, listed the compensations being sought to include RM2 million in general damages at a rate of RM50,000 for each day of his unlawful detention, which lasted from March 15, 2021, till April 23, 2021. Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari has withdrawn the case against Aminu Adamu, a 500-level student of the Federal University, Dutse. The 24-year-old student was arrested by the police in Dutse for allegedly posting a defamatory tweet on his Twitter handle against the First Lady. Adamu, a student of Environmental Management, was alleged to have posted a plump picture of Aisha Buhari with a caption in Hausa, translated to mean, “Mama is feeding fat on poor people’s money.” He tweeted on June 8, 2022. Following the freezing of the bank account of some promoters of the #EndSARS protesters, a Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria to unfreeze 20 bank accounts linked to protesters and promoters of #EndSARS with immediate effect. The order was given by Justice Ahmed Mohammed following the sudden withdrawal of a suit filed against them by the CBN through its counsel, Michael Aondoakaa (SAN). The apex bank had asked for 180 days to probe the alleged crime against the defendants. The United Nations Children’s agency, Unicef has condemned the sentencing of 13-year-old Omar Farouq to 10 years in prison with menial labour for blasphemy by the Kano State Sharia Court at Feli Hockey, Kano. UNICEF representative in Nigeria, Peter Hawkins condemned the sentence by the Sharia Court for uncomplimentary comments describing it as an abuse of child right. “It also negates all core underlying principles of child rights and child justice that Nigeria – and by implication, Kano State – has signed on to,” Hawkins said.
