US Slams Visa Ban on Election Riggers in Nigeria

The United States government says it has imposed visa ban on some persons for their actions during the conduct of the Kogi and Bayelsa state gubernatorial elections and in the run-up to the Edo and Ondo state polls. This was disclosed on Monday in a statement signed by Morgan Ortagus, spokesperson for the Department of State. The statement read in part, “In July 2019, we announced the imposition of visa restrictions on Nigerians who undermined the February and March 2019 elections. Ekiti Set to Reopen Schools, Fixes Date

The governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi has ratified September 21 for the resumption of primary and secondary schools in the South West state. This comes after the recent approval by the Presidential Task Force (PTF) for the reopening of schools which have been shut since March in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19. Fayemi made the announcement in a state-wide broadcast on Sunday evening. He approved October 2 as resumption date for tertiary institutions in Ekiti State, subject to each institution’s governing council decision. The Nigerian Police force has vowed to “vehemently resist” students planning a massive protest in Ogun State over the recent spike in petrol price and electricity tariffs. Following the fire outbreak at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Akure, Ondo State, Police has launched an investigation to unravel circumstances leading to the incident. No fewer than 5,000 Smart Card Readers stored in a container inside the INEC office were destroyed during the fire that took place on Thursday. Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Bolaji Salami during his visit to the INEC office for an on-scene assessment said pledged to bring any individual involved in the fire to justice. Confederation of African Football (CAF) has postponed all the remaining matches in Africa’s two continental club competitions for a second time due to COVID-19 concerns. The postponement was informed by a surge in COVID-19 cases in Morocco which caused cancellation of fixtures in the North African country during the first two weeks of September, Punch reports.
