Sowore, Four others Arraigned in Abuja For Alleged Public Disturbance

The publisher of online platform, Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore has been arraigned with four others before a Magistrate’s Court in Wuse zone 2, Abuja by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). Sowore,Juwon Sanyaolu, Damilare Adenola, Peter and Kimrere were by the the Special Weapons Tactical Team of NPF in Abuja over their alleged participation in a protest march on the eve of the New Year celebration. They were arraigned on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly and public disturbance. The prosecution, however, alleged that the defendants were arrested on New Year eve with placards calling for a violent revolution against President Muhammadu Buhari. Certificate Forgery: Court Admits More Exhibits Against Obaseki

The All Progressives Congress on Wednesday tendered two more documents in support of its allegation of certificate forgery leveled against the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, at the Federal High Court in Abuja. One of the documents was the original copy of a first-degree certificate awarded to Emmanuel Balogun and by the University of Ibadan on July 6, 1979. Obaseki had said he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics from the same university in the same year. The other document admitted as exhibit by the court was a report of a forensic document examiner, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr Raphael Onwuzuligbo. Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong has signed the N147bn appropriation bill and the state anti-kidnapping bill into law. The House of Assembly in the state had raised the 2021 appropriation bill to over N147bn from the initial N133bn presented to it by Governor Lalong. The Governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr Macham Makut said, the adjustment in the figure was done by the lawmakers to accommodate more interests before passing the bill which has now been signed into law by the governor, Punch reports. Justice Ahmed Lemu Dies at 91

A prominent Islamic scholar and retired justice, Ahmed Lemu, has died on Thursday. The retired justice died aged 91 in Minna, Niger State. His death was announced by his son, Nurudeen, on behalf of the family, Punch reports. He said, “It is with sadness and reverence to Allah that we announce the passing away of our father, Dr Justice Sheikh Ahmed Lemu OFR, in the early hours of this morning in Minna. Burial arrangements to be announced later.” Lemu is one of the only two Nigerians who won the King Faisal Prize. During his lifetime, Lemu played a key role in nation building. Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Team, collapsed in the dock during the resumed hearing in his N2bn money laundering trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday. The sitting was scheduled for the hearing of Maina’s no-case submission, following the close of the prosecution’s case with nine witnessed earlier on Wednesday. A loud sound of Maina’s fall drew attention when his counsel, Anayo Adibe was briefing the judge, Justice Okong Abang, that his team had yet to receive the records of proceedings requested from the court’s registry. Prison officials hastily rushed to attend to him. The presiding judge, Justice Abang said the court would rise for about five minutes.

Court Declines Maina’s Adjournment Request

A Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected the request by Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reformed Task Team, for an adjournment to prepare for his defence. The preceding judge, Justice Okon Abang held that the request was intended to waste the judicial time of the court. Justice Abang had on December 4, 2020, adjourned the N2bn money laundering case till Tuesday (today) based on a request by Maina’s new lawyer, Mr Adaji Abel, who solicited for more time to enable him to prepare for the case. Hon Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe has been declared the legitimately elected candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, for the rescheduled Cross River North Senatorial bye-election set to take place tomorrow. A High Court of the Federation Capital Territory (FCT) rendered the judgement declaring Jarigbe the duly elected candidate to fly the flag of the party.
