Names of Seven ‘Lekki Shootings Victims’ Surface at Lagos Panel

The names of seven alleged victims of the October 20 Lekki shootings have ‘surfaced’ at the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Enquiry and Restitution for Victims of SARS related abuses and other matters. Their lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika SAN, told the panel that he had a petition on their behalf against the Nigerian Army. Army Personnel Arrive Probe Venue, to Present Footage of Lekki Shootings

Army personnel attached to the 81 Division, have arrived the venue of the inquiry into the alleged shooting of peaceful #EndSARS protesters by soldiers at the Lekki tollgate area of Lagos on October 20. The Army had submitted the names of three Lieutenant Generals and a Lieutenant Colonel who will testify before the panel in response to invitation by the retired Justice Doris Okuwobi-headed Judicial Panel of Inquiry, Punch reports. Arabic Inscriptions on Naira Notes Not a Symbol of Islam – CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has kicked against a suit filed before the federal high court in Lagos asking for the removal of the Ajami (Arabic) inscriptions on the naira notes. According to the defense presented by the bank, it will require a lot of money to discard already printed notes and print new ones without Ajami. CBN equally said the Ajami is an inscription to help non-English speakers who are Ajami literate rather than a symbol or mark of Islam. The bank disclosed this while countering a suit filed by Malcom Omirhobo, a Lagos-based counsel, presided by Mohammed Liman. The Court of Appeal in Abuja today has upheld the election of the Bayelsa State governor, Duoye Diri. The court set aside the August 18, 2020 verdict of the Bayelsa State Governorship Petitions Tribunal which had ordered a fresh poll to be conducted within 90 days. The Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP), had petitioned the court over alleged unlawful exclusion of its candidate, King George from the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The tribunal had in a split decision of two-to-one, voided the November 16, 2019 Bayelsa State governorship poll. FG Gets New Order to Stop Planned NLC, TUC Strike

  The Federal Government has obtained a new order against the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) from going on with their plan to commence a nationwide strike on Monday. Justice Ibrahim Galadima of the National Industrial Court issued the order in Abuja in an ex parte application made by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation. The NLC and TUC had earlier declared a nationwide strike starting from Monday, 28th September to protest the recent hike in petrol pump price and electricity tariff.

Appeal Court Constitutes Edo Governorship Election Tribunal Panel

  President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, on Monday constituted the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal to handle petitions arising from the gubernatorial election in Edo State. UNICEF Expresses Concern Over Jailing of 13-Year-old Child in Kano for Blasphemy

The United Nations Children’s agency, Unicef has condemned the sentencing of 13-year-old Omar Farouq to 10 years in prison with menial labour for blasphemy by the Kano State Sharia Court at Feli Hockey, Kano. UNICEF representative in Nigeria, Peter Hawkins condemned the sentence by the Sharia Court for uncomplimentary comments describing it as an abuse of child right. “It also negates all core underlying principles of child rights and child justice that Nigeria – and by implication, Kano State – has signed on to,” Hawkins said.
