Chinese Businessman Jailed 20 years in Rwanda For Torturing Local Mineworkers

A court in Rwanda has jailed a Chinese national for 20 years for torturing local mineworkers after a video showing him whipping a man tied to a post went viral on social media. Sun Shujun, the manager of a mine in the west of the country, was convicted on Tuesday along with an accomplice following his arrest last September. “It is clear that (Sun) tortured the victims and issued corporal punishment with malicious intent, and this is a grave crime,” Judge Jacques Kanyarukiga ruled, ordering him to serve a 20-year term in prison. Sun, who was in court for the verdict, acknowledged assaulting two workers, saying he beat them because he was “frustrated and fed up of them constantly stealing minerals”. The 43-year-old had argued for his release, saying he compensated the two by pay...

Adejobi also said the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, received the Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Tallen, today in his office at the Louis Edet House, Force Headquarters, Abuja. “The Minister discussed amongst other things, the plight of women in Nigeria, particularly in relation to gender and domestic-based violence. Blacks in Ukraine Being Prevented from Fleeing the Country

Blacks Trying to Leave Ukraine Blacks in Ukraine are calling out for help, alleging that they are being prevented from fleeing the country. It's no longer news that Russia has invaded parts of Ukraine and that people are fleeing the now threatened country. What may however be news to some is that blacks may be the victims of marginalization and even ill-treatment as people try to flee. It's on record that blacks, especially Africans, make up about 20% of the Ukrainian International students' populations. With the conflict now erupting, they like many others are trying to leave the country. With many African countries not showing much by way of commitment to its citizens in the now waring country, these international students are forced to fend for themselves. See Also: Fede...

I Won’t Bury My Son Even If It Takes 30 Years To Get Justice – Sylvester’s Dad

Sylvester Oromoni, the father of the late 12-year-old pupil of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, has restated the family’s commitment to get justice, saying that he would not bury his son even if it takes 30 years to get justice. He also kicked against the report of the autopsy carried out at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, alleging that there was foul play. Sylvester’s death went viral following a social media post by his cousin, Perry Oromoni, who alleged that some senior pupils of the school beat him up in his hostel because he refused to join a cult. The school denied the claim, stating that the boy complained of leg pains following an injury he sustained while playing football. The state government ordered the indefinite closure of th...

An online petition initiated change.org by Reno Omokri, a former special assistant to Nigeria’s former President, Goodluck Jonathan, has been removed from the website. The petition was addressed to the International Criminal Court to arraign Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, over alleged crimes against humanity. “This petition isn’t available. Either the URL is incorrect, it violated our Community Guidelines, or the starter removed it,” a message on the petition page said. The petition, which has garnered 80,000 signatories on Friday, is titled, “Petition To The ICC To Arraign Muhammadu Buhari for Crimes Against Humanity”. Opinion: Attrition of Southern Nigeria Professionals and the Aftermath by P Omonua

It is no longer news that there is an unprecedented upsurge in the migration of southern Nigeria professionals over the last 5 years. The best brains in the Southern Nigeria are leaving in droves. Many of those that have not left are making all necessary arrangements; they are making enquiries about the process involved from those that have succeeded in leaving. Some people may argue this is not uniquely Nigerian, that universally, people have always migrated around the world. A friend of mine once compared our experience to the Biblical era. He said even Moses led the children of Israel during their migration from Egypt to the promise land, which is incontrovertible. The difference, (which I did not bother to tell him due to his obstinacy) is that the children of Israel were migra...

Release #EndSARS Protesters Immediately – Civic Group, SERAP Warns Nigerian Police

The group made the call in a post on its Twitter handle on Wednesday. The tweet reads, “Nigerian authorities must immediately and unconditionally release two protesters including a journalist reportedly arrested this morning by the Lagos State Police Command at the Lekki tollgate where the #EndSARSMemorial protest is scheduled to hold. Protest is a right.” BREAKING: Nigerian authorities must immediately and unconditionally release two protesters including a journalist reportedly arrested this morning by the Lagos State Police Command at the Lekki tollgate where the #EndSAR...

#EndSARS: No Security Officer Punished For Killing, Others One Year After Brutal Crackdown —Amnesty International

A non-governmental organisation, Amnesty International has alleged that the #EndSARS Judicial Panel of Inquiry dashed hopes of victims rather than providing restitution to them. On October 19, 2020, the Lagos state government set up a nine-man Judicial Panel of Inquiry to investigate cases of brutality and human rights violations perpetrated by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the dissolved Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The panels, which were also established in other states of the country were mainly set up as a response to one of the demands of youth during the #EndSARS protests. A statement issued by the organisation explained that despite promises of reform, police impunity continues. It stated partly, “One year after peaceful #EndSARS protests ended in a bru...

Igboho: Benin Republic Snub Nigerian Govt’s Extradition Request, May Free Him Today

The attempt by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to extradite Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, alias Sunday Igboho, to Nigeria from Benin Republic has suffered a setback. Authorities in the neighbouring West African nation have insisted on a fair trial for Igboho before yielding to the demand, SaharaReporters has gathered. The Beninoise government said it won't handle a request for extradition without first trying him for the local offense he was arrested for. Recall that Igboho was arrested on Monday night in Cadjèhoun Airport, Cotonou with a "fake" Beninese passport while trying to flee to Germany. He is expected to be arraigned for immigration-related offenses in Benin Republic later today after a spirited move by the Buhari government to bring him back to...
