Nigeria: Buhari Finally Sacks Yusuf, Replaces Him with Sambo as NHIS boss

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Prof. Mohammed Nasir Sambo to replace Usman Yusuf as the Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). A statement from the federal Ministry of Health on Monday night said the president approved the termination of appointment of the current executive secretary, Prof. Usman Yusuf who has been on administrative leave. This followed recommendations by an independent fact-finding panel on NHIS, the statement said. The statement said the president also approved the dissolution of the governing board of NHIS and directed the permanent secretary, Federal Ministry of Health to exercise full powers of the council pending the constitution of a new board.

The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has commenced the second phase of the 2019 Polio Vaccination Campaign which was preceded by a sensitisation training for health reporters and journalists, ahead of the statewide polio vaccine administration. Professor Usman Yusuf, the Executive Secretary for the National Health Insurance Scheme who was recently suspended was this morning escorted into the premises of the NHIS by almost 50 Policemen. Staff of the scheme who attempted to prevent his entry were dispersed by the tear gas the policemen fired at them. The suspended Executive Secretary claims that the governing board that suspended him had no powers to do so. According to him, only the President could give such an order regarding his appointment.

In an obvious attempt at showing Nigerians and the world that he is indeed fit, President Buhari today trekked the whole of 800 meters home. Buhari had gone to a mosque in his hometown Daura for Eid el-Kabir prayer after which he trekked home. The distance of the mosque to his home is about 800 meters. 800 meters is the about the same as walking up and down the length of a standard football pitch about four times. According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria, he was cheered on by well wisher with the chant of "sai baba".

Nigeria: President Buhari Returns After 15 Days

President Buhari has returned to the country after spending about 15 days on his 10 day vacation to the UK. It will be recalled that President Buhari left Nigeria on the 3rd of August on what was called a 10-day vacation. It was therefore expected that he will return by the 13th. His failure to return at the expected time started generating rumours regarding the actual reason for his visit to the UK and the state of his health. Announcing his return this evening, Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, wrote on his Facebook page "President Buhari returns to Abuja after 10 working days holiday to an enthusiastic reception from Nigerians on 18th August 2018"
