FG Expends N50bn Monthly for Electricity Subsidy – Power Minister

The Federal Government has been expending N50bn monthly for the subsidy of electricity supply across the country, the Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, has said. Mamman said the subsidy was occasioned by the constant complaints by poor Nigerians over the unavoidable and periodic increase in the cost of electricity. He said the Federal Government provided the funds to make up for the shortfall by the power distribution companies who had been unable to meet up with the cost of bulk electricity supplied to them by the generating companies. He went on to note that the subsidy had now decreased by half, but still constituted a serious drain on the nation’s economy following a minor increase in the tariff regime. This was contained in the power minister’s speech while receiving in his ...

Minister of Power Directs NERC to Suspend Reviewed Electricity Tariff

The minister of power, Saleh Mamman, has asked the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, to suspend the implementation of the reviewed electricity tariff. The directive followed the approval by NERC on Tuesday for an increase in electricity tariff across the federation. The minister in a statement issued on Thursday said the tariff review will be suspended until the conclusion of the joint ad hoc committee’s work at the end of January. According to Mamman, the government had initially reduced the tariff of all categories of electricity consumers to help Nigerians cope with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. He said, “Government continues to fully subsidise 55% of on-grid consumers in bands D and E and maintain the life line tariff for the poor and underprivileged....

NERC Ratifies Fresh Increase in Electricity Tariff

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has ratified an increase in electricity tariff across the country, effective from January 1, 2021. This was contained in a directive issued on December 31, 2020, signed by NERCC chairman, Sanusi Garba. The regulatory commission disclosed that the new tariff will remain valid until the issuance of another minor review order or an extraordinary tariff review order by the commission, The Cable reports. It said the upward review was informed by factors such as Nigeria’s inflation rate, exchange rate, US rate of inflation, available generation capacity, gas price, MDA losses and capex adjustment. The NERC said, “This order supersedes ORDER/NERC/ 202B/2020 and shall take effect from January 1, 2021, and shall cease to have an effe...

Electricity Consumers to Get Refund for Meter Payment – NERC

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has said that electricity consumers who already paid for meters under the Meter Asset Provider scheme will be refunded. This was contained in an emailed response to Punch, through the commission’s Head of Public Affairs, Mr Michael Faloseyi. The clarification followed the recent announcement by the Federal Government that six million meters would be distributed free of charge to consumers under the National Mass Metering Programme, MAP, prompting some consumers who already paid for meters to inquire if their money would be refunded. Customers initially had two options for obtaining meter under the MAP scheme, which took effect on May 1, 2019. They either made an upfront payment or paid in instalments through metering service charge on...

Blackout in Kaduna, Sokoto, Others as Power Grid Collapses

The power grid in the country collapsed once again on Sunday, leading to total blackouts for several hours in parts of the nation, African News Today has gathered. This was announced by two of the power distribution companies in the country, Kaduna Electric, and Eko Electricity Distribution Company. Announcing the national grid collapse, Kaduna Electric in a post on its Twiter handle said, “We regret to inform you that the loss of power supply in our franchise – Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states – is as a result of the collapse of the national grid. The collapse occurred at about 11:26 am this morning. “Supply shall be restored as soon as the grid is back up. We regret all inconveniences,” the Disco added. Also, EKEDC in a text message delivered to its customers on Sunday, said,...

Nigerians to Pay Only for Electricity Consumed – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has reechoed his administration’s commitment to putting an end to estimated billing in every form in the country. Riam Buhari who disclosed this in a series of tweets on his verified Twitter handle, @MBuhari, on Wednesday said the federal government has appropriated funds to distribute one million meters at no cost to consumers across the country. He said the distribution has already commenced in parts of Kano, Kaduna, Lagos and Abuja while noting that the target is to meet the 6.5 million deficit of meters nationwide. Buhari wrote, “Under the first phase of the Presidential Mass Metering Initiative, we are making funding immediately available for DisCos to roll out 1,000,000 meters in the first phase, at no cost to consumers. Implementation of New Electricity Tariff to Resume Next Week

Special adviser to the president on infrastrure, Ahmed Zakari has said that electricity distribution companies (DiscCos) will resume implementation of the new electricity tariff next week. A news service-based reflective tariff (SRT) structure was implemented on September 1 by the DisCos after approval by President Muhammadu Buhari. The new tariff was halted after the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) kicked against the hike. The organised labour called for a nationwide strike to protest the new electricity tariff and the hike in petrol pump price. However, the strike was suspended at the eleventh hour after the organised labour reached an agreement with the federal government to suspend the implementation of the new tariff pending the findings of...

FG Approves Extension of New Electricity Tariffs Suspension by One Week

The Federal Government and the organised labour yesterday agreed to extend the suspension of the new electricity tariffs by one week. The decision was reached on Sunday during a meeting between the FG team and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress. Recall that the government had on September 28 postponed the implementation of the new tariffs by two weeks to its review by the technical committee after a meeting with organised labour, which kicked against the spike in petroleum and electricity prices. The FG team led by the Secretary to the Government of Federation, Boss Mustapha in a meeting with organised labour at the Presidential Villa banquet hall also agreed to distribute one million meters to reduce the metering gap in the country. The ...

Nigeria: Exposing Lai Mohammed’s Lies On Electricity Tariff Hike by Reno Omokri

My attention has been drawn to comments by General Muhammadu Buhari’s aptly named Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, to the effect that the recent 300% increase in power tariffs is the fault of the Jonathan administration. Mr Mohammed’s exact words were as follows: “Before we came in, the power sector had been privatised by the previous administration, but the people they sold to them are incompetent. When we assumed power, we met the mess. Apart from the fact that the Distribution Companies (Discos), could not meter the people, they also could not pay for the electricity generated by the Generation Companies (Gencos), from the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Companies.” Not only are these statements false, they also expose Lai Mohammed’s, and the Buhari administration’s, sh...

Nigerian Police Vows to Vehemently Resist Students Planning Protest Against Fuel, Electricity Tariff Hike

The Nigerian Police force has vowed to “vehemently resist” students planning a massive protest in Ogun State over the recent spike in petrol price and electricity tariffs. This was made known by spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi in a communique on Saturday. This comes as the five days ultimatum issued to the federal government by members of the National Association of Nigerian Students, South-West Zone D, to reverse the hike of petrol and electricity tariff is set to expire on Sunday. The students promised to take to the streets across South-West states if government retained the increment. In his reaction, Oyeyemi cautioned the students to shun such action, noting the force would not tolerate any group to hold the entire good people of Ogun state...
