Enugu Approves January 18 for School Resumption

Following a meeting of stakeholders in the education sector on Monday, the Enugu State Ministry of Education has announced January 18, 2021, as resumption date for all schools in the state. This was contained in a statement by the State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Uche Eze. He said the decision was reached at a meeting between the Ministry and major stakeholders in the sector, on Monday. Former UNILAG VC, Oye ibidapo-Obe is Dead

Professor Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos has died, aged 71. Ibidapo-Obe died on Sunday in Lagos State. His death was confirmed by the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, UNILAG chapter, Dr Dele Ashiru. Ashiru described the late Ibidapo-Obe as a quintessential academic, noting that he would be solely missed in the education sector. He said, "Yes, he is dead. We got the sad news this evening. He is a distinguished scholar, a seasoned university administrator whose death remains a very big loss to the Nigerian university system and indeed the Nigerian society," he added. Varsity Technologists Threaten Strike Over N40bn Allowance, Issue 14-day Strike Notice

The National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, on Saturday said it has issued a 14-day industrial action notice to the Federal Government. The association said the action was informed by alleged incongruity in the sharing of the N40 billion earned allowances released to the four university unions by the Federal Government. The university workers also asked for the release of 50 per cent of the N71b earned allowances being owed members of the union based on the 20019 agreement with the government. ASUU Suspends Strike

The Academic Staff Union of University, ASUU, has called off the nine-month industrial action embarked by the association. This was made known at a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja led by the president, Biodun Ogunyemi. According to Mr Ogunyemi, the decision to suspend the long industrial action followed the agreement reached with the Federal Government and a meeting with its National Executive Council (NEC). He said the suspension of the strike takes effect from Thursday, December 24th, 2020.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, says the Academic Activities in Nigeria Universities will resume January. Ganduje Orders Closure of Schools in Kano  

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has ordered the closure of all public and private schools in the state with immediate effect. This was disclosed in a statement signed by the state Commissioner for Education, Sanusi Kiru, a copy of which was made available to journalists in Kano on Wednesday. The statement failed to state the reason for the closure of the schools, but reports suggest the development might be connected to the hike in cases of COVID-19 in some parts of the country, which has prompted the closure of schools in states such as Kaduna and Jigawa. ASUU Assured FG to Suspend Strike Today – Ngige

The Federal Government has countered the claim by the President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi that the government had reneged on offers made to the union, noting that the government had delivered on its offers. The ASUU President had said that the varsity lecturers would not suspend the strike until their salary arrears are paid by the government.
