The Department of State Services (DSS) on Thursday said it does not detain citizens on the order of powerful people. The Service was reacting to an opinion in a newspaper where it was alleged: “hundreds of innocent citizens are currently languishing in Police and State Security Services (SSS) detention centres across the country, following arrests ordered by powerful men and women.” Public Relations Officer of the Service, Dr. Peter Afunanya, in a statement titled: “Re: Beyond Abba Kyari’s Indictment” said the opinion written by Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi was misinforming, inciting, and should be withdrawn. Police Confirm Killing of DSS Official by Soldiers in Ekiti

The Ekiti State Police Command has confirmed the killing of an operative of the Department of State Services (DSS) by three soldiers. The Public Relations Officer of the Command, Sunday Abutu, described the killing as unfortunate and mindless. Abutu said the gory incident occurred on Friday evening at a hotel located on NTA Road in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital during an argument that ensued between some soldiers and a DSS official, leading to the death of the latter. He noted that the Command had begun investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident, adding that the deceased’s corpse had been deposited in the morgue. The Department of State Services, DSS, has confirmed that a former aide of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, Salihu Tanko-Yakasai is in their custody. Questions have been asked over the whereabouts of Tanko-Yakasai since his criticism of the President Muhammadu Buhari government and the All Progressives Congress-led government. The family of the late newspaper vendor, Ifeanyichukwu Okereke, who was murdered by a security aide of Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has demanded for the sum of N500m as compensation. The Okereke family said it would take legal action against Gbajabiamila if all the demands were not met within seven days. Violent Clash in Enugu Claims Lives of ‘21’ IPOB Members, Two DSS Operatives (See Video)

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has claimed that 21 of its members were killed in a violent clash with security operatives and 47 others arrested in Emene, Enugu State on Sunday. The Department of State Services (DSS) has also alleged that two of its operatives were killed by members of the IPOB. The claims were made by the IPOB and SSS in separate statements on Sunday. The clash  left residents of the neighborhood gripped with fear as armed police officers and soldiers were deployed to ensure normalcy returns to the area. We note with dismay that Mr Safiyanu Abba, the Head of DSS at NAIA deliberately obstructed airport Security process, and slapped an Aviation Security Officer who was performing his duty by calling on Mr Safiyanu Abba to desist from doing so. This happened on the 17th July at about 15:25 hours. He breached security procedure by obstructing further searching of a visitor who had just walked through the metal detector and activated the alarm. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria strongly condemns this abuse of power and the Security process in our airport. This has also been duly escalated. President Buhari has appointed Yusuf Magaji Bichi, another Northerner as the new Boss of the DSS. Following the sack of the former DSS boss, Lawal Daura by Vice President Yomi Osinbajo on Agust 7th while acting for President Buhari, a southerner, Matthew Seiyefa took up the affairs of the DSS in an acting capacity. Breaking News: Osinbajo Sacks DSS Chief

The Nigerian Acting President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has dismissed the Director General of the DSS. Mr. Lawal Musa Daura. The news was broken a few moments ago by the Senior Special Assistant-Media and Publicity to the Vice President Laolu Akande. In a tweet posted this afternoon, Mr Akande said "AgP Yemi Osinbajo has directed the termination of the appointment of the DG of the DSS, Mr. Lawal Musa Daura. Mr. Daura has been directed to hand over to the most senior officer of the State Security Service until further notice." This may not be unconnected with the incident this morning where the DSS laid siege on the National Assembly complex, preventing honorable members and their staff from gaining access. We shall provide more details as they emerge.
