Samuel Ortom, Governor of Benue State, has called on the Federal Government to issue gun licenses to responsible citizens to wield assault rifles like AK47 as a responsive measure to curtail the spate of insecurity in the country.

Ortom, however, said the move should be regulated by a well formulated legal guidance to prevent weapons falling into the wrong hands.

The governor made the suggestion and others as measures to curb insecurity while presenting on Tuesday during a virtual meeting organised by the Centre for Values in Leadership, in collaboration with Nigeria Governor’s Forum.

He further stated that governments at every level must realise the fact that insecurity is a major challenge to the country actualizing its developmental goals and must brace up to tackle the problem honestly.

Ortom while presenting the paper titled ‘Insecurity and Governance Challenge in the New Normal’, suggested proper funding of the country’s security architecture and continuous training of their personnel to keep them informed of global dynamics in the fight against insecurity.

He called on government to adopt ranching as remained the best global practice of animal husbandry, adding that it was also essential for government at the centre to enact law to ban open grazing.

The statement released by Terver Akase, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ortom advocated for improved educational standards and sustained public enlightenment campaigns to give the people, particularly youths the needed orientation to shun negative acts and become more patriotic.
