UNIBEN Shutdown After Students’ Protest Over Increased Fees

The management of the University of Benin has announced the immediate shutdown of the University following a protest by students. The closure was announced by the Vice-chancellor, Lilian Salami after students protested on Tuesday against the N20,000 hike in their tuition. The students, who alleged that the institution’s spokesman told them to go into prostitution to pay their fees, gathered at the school main gate on Tuesday, carrying placards with different inscriptions, such as 'Madam VC wants to milk us dry', 'Salami wants us to do cash out', 'UNIBEN VC Salami is after my sanity as a student, and many more. The National Youth Service Corps has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Health Insurance Scheme on the inclusion of Corps Members in the NHIS programme. A Ugandan athlete who went missing in Japan on July 16 after failing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics has been spotted at Nagoya Station in central Japan by CCTV, news agency Kyodo reported on Monday citing a police source. Uganda’s Olympic delegation said on Friday weightlifter Julius Ssekitoleko had been registered as missing from a team training camp in Izumisano, some 200 kilometres south-west of Nagoya.
