Obaseki Swears in Eight High Court Judges

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has promised that his administration would keep supporting the judiciary. He spoke yesterday when he swore in eight new judges for the State High Court. Obaseki congratulated the judges, and urged them to carry out their duties without fear or favour as their appointment is from God. Zambia President Fires Health Minister Chilufya

Zambia’s presidency on Sunday announced the sacking of the country’s health minister, arrested for alleged graft last year but cleared of charges. Chitalu Chilufya, 48, was held in June following accusations he used ill-gotten gains to acquire property. A court cleared him of the charges in August due to lack of evidence and he resumed his duties. But President Edgar Lungu unexpectedly fired the minister on Sunday without given any reason. “President Lungu has terminated the appointment of Chitalu Chilufya as health minister with immediate effect,” presidential spokesman Isaac Chipampe said in statement. The magistrates’ court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Thursday, granted bail in the sum of N500,000 each to the principal of the Deeper Life High School, Uyo, and four accused persons in the case of the alleged molestation of an 11-year-old Junior Secondary School 1 pupil, Don-Davies Archibong. According to The PUNCH, the seven accused persons arraigned were Mrs Ndidi Solomon (suspended Principal), Joseph Nseabasi, Akpan Johnson, Egor Wilson, Joseph Ikenna, and two minors, Shalom Ibukun and Ola Feyisetan. The publisher of online platform, Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore has been arraigned with four others before a Magistrate’s Court in Wuse zone 2, Abuja by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). Sowore,Juwon Sanyaolu, Damilare Adenola, Peter and Kimrere were by the the Special Weapons Tactical Team of NPF in Abuja over their alleged participation in a protest march on the eve of the New Year celebration. Over 1,927 persons have signed the petition demanding for the sack of the First City Monument Bank, FCMB, Managing Director, Adam Nuru, over allegations bothering on infidelity with a former staff of the bank, Moyo Thomas. The petition is asking the Central Bank of Nigeria and the FCMB board to sack Nuru on ethical grounds. Gov Lalong Assents to N147bn 2021 Budget

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong has signed the N147bn appropriation bill and the state anti-kidnapping bill into law. The House of Assembly in the state had raised the 2021 appropriation bill to over N147bn from the initial N133bn presented to it by Governor Lalong. The Governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr Macham Makut said, the adjustment in the figure was done by the lawmakers to accommodate more interests before passing the bill which has now been signed into law by the governor, Punch reports. The Police Service Commission (PSC) has sacked four senior Police Officers for discreditable misconduct and dishonesty. A Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected the request by Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reformed Task Team, for an adjournment to prepare for his defence. The preceding judge, Justice Okon Abang held that the request was intended to waste the judicial time of the court.
