Alleged human trafficker, Matthew Bassey was intercepted by The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in an attempt to traffic illicit drugs to Dubai.

The 29-year-old planted the drugs into the luggage of an orphan, Ms. Peter Gift Eno, who he assigned to traffic those drugs, but was later intercepted by NDLEA officials at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

Matthew Bassey from Oron in Akwa Ibom state was apprehended after the attempt by Gift Eno to board her flight failed.

NDLEA agents got to her at the airport’s departure hall, where her luggage was searched, and it contained 50 parcels of cannabis (2.8kg) hidden in food items.

A statement by one of the NDLEA officials, Femi Babafemi, revealed that suspicion was raised when the age declared by the lady contradicted the one stated on her international passport.

He further disclosed that the lady also hailed from the same local government as Matthew Bassey and was promised a job by the trafficker if she could carry out his mission.

“Further interview reveals that the human trafficker who recruited and brought her to the airport, Matthew Bassey, was still lurking around the airport, waiting for her departure. He was promptly tracked and arrested”

“Investigations showed that the victim who hails from the same Oron LGA of Akwa Ibom State as Bassey recently lost her mother and as a result made it easy for Bassey to recruit her with the promise of securing her a job in Dubai, UAE. It was further discovered that the recruiter leveraged the victim’s naivety and planted drugs in her bag for onward delivery to his contact in Dubai,” Babafemi said.
