US lauds INEC, Security Agencies on Conduct of Edo Poll

The United States has praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies on their good outing during the Edo State governorship election last Saturday. This was contained in a statement by the US mission in Nigeria on Wednesday. The US also acknowledged the effort of civil society organisations in Nigeria for their role in promoting democratic principles and accountability during the poll. It commended the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Godwin Osagie, his All Progressive Congress (APC) counterpart, Osagie Ize-Iyamu and the Edo electorates for their roles in ensuring peaceful conduct of the poll. INEC Office Fire Outbreak: Ondo Police Launches Investigation

Following the fire outbreak at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Akure, Ondo State, Police has launched an investigation to unravel circumstances leading to the incident. No fewer than 5,000 Smart Card Readers stored in a container inside the INEC office were destroyed during the fire that took place on Thursday. Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Bolaji Salami during his visit to the INEC office for an on-scene assessment said pledged to bring any individual involved in the fire to justice. "We want to promise all law-abiding citizens of the state not to entertain any fear as we have begun our investigation. "Our command is fully prepared to give maximum police protection before, during and even after the election," he said.

The Commander of the Four Special Forces command, Doma, Nasarawa State, Maude Ali Gadzama on Tuesday confirmed the killing of Terwase Akwaza, popularly known as Gana who had been declared wanted in Benue state. Gadzama said Gana was gunned down in a fire fight with military personnel along Gbese-Gboko road. Recall the Benue State Government had in 2015, offered Gana amnesty along with about 500 people but most of them returned to their alleged criminal activities. Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom has said he would use rue of law to ensure that any Fulani herder who establishes a vigilante group is jailed. Fulani rights organization, Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, had in July announced plans to form security outfits across the federation to curb insecurity. Violent Clash in Enugu Claims Lives of ‘21’ IPOB Members, Two DSS Operatives (See Video)

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has claimed that 21 of its members were killed in a violent clash with security operatives and 47 others arrested in Emene, Enugu State on Sunday. The Department of State Services (DSS) has also alleged that two of its operatives were killed by members of the IPOB. The claims were made by the IPOB and SSS in separate statements on Sunday. The clash  left residents of the neighborhood gripped with fear as armed police officers and soldiers were deployed to ensure normalcy returns to the area.
