Fashion: Dress Like You by Lois Emmanuel

You are not truly free until you can be who you are without apologies. No truer words have ever been spoken. There are many ways by which we express ourselves and fashion happens to be one of the most because it is a visual medium. Let’s be honest, one of the first things a person sees when they look at you is what you wear, which is why it is so easy to judge a person by what they wear. The two most common ways people dress are : i) To Impress. ii) To Express. Dressing to impress in this context means wearing things in such a way to please other people; maybe because because an invisible law says you should. Dressing to express, on the other hand means wearing things that you like and feel comfortable in, no matter what anybody thinks. SOME REASONS WHY PEOPLE DRESS TO IM...

Health: Breast cancer survivors bare it all

For women facing breast cancer, there is nothing like talking with those who have walked the path before them. On Wednesday, that sharing will be taken to a new level. After medical experts speak at a Toronto symposium marking Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day, in a room off to the side, Willow’s Show and Tell Lounge will offer something unique. Under soft lighting and clustered around coffee tables, about 20 women will unzip their tops and bare the results of mastectomies and breast-reconstruction surgery to those considering the procedure. They will show their incisions, talk about how their new breasts feel, and share their emotional journeys through the surgical ward. Informal show and tells frequently happen in bathrooms at breast cancer events, says Natalie Witki...

World: Human rights gone wrong – The case of sex selection

In a perfect world, sex selection would not exist. Parents would not prefer a male child, even to achieve a gender balance in their offspring. Vulnerable women would not be subjected to abortions, including late-term abortions because they are carrying a female child, or be required to be continually pregnant until a male is born. The increase in trafficking of women due to adverse sex ratios would dry up and alleged associated ills such as an increased number of rapes, abduction and wife-sharing would end. At the political level, the predominant number of men would not re-enforce male control over political power. However, it is not a perfect world, and so we are confronted with efforts to ban sex selection to stop discrimination against females, such as those of MP Mark Warawa in Bil...

Senegal have been disqualified from the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations after a riot forced the abandonment of Saturday's home tie with Ivory Coast. It is not yet clear whether the Confederation of African Football will take further action against Senegal. The match in Dakar was called off after 74 minutes, with Ivory Coast 2-0 up on the night and 6-2 ahead on aggregate. Caf has officially confirmed the result as a 2-0 win for Ivory Coast, sending them through to next year's tournament. Senegal manager Ferdinand Coly said on Sunday that "Senegal will accept the sanctions". He also apologised to Ivory Coast. Trouble flared after striker Didier Drogba scored his side's second goal from the penalty spot. Visiting supporters were forced to leap down on to the pitch to escape as viol...
