Come To Ebonyi And See If You Would Return –Governor Umahi Dares IPOB Over Threats To Stop Buhari’s Visit

The Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, on Sunday, lambasted the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) over the group’s threat to lock down the South-East region should President Muhammadu Buhari visit the state. According to Umahi, Buhari’s visit to the state was already billed for early next year, adding, however, that projects to that effect (in the state), were being executed as if he was to visit this month (December 2021). Umahi stated this during the state annual Thanksgiving Service at the Government House Chapel, Abakaliki, saying the IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, lacked both the capacity and warfare prowess to stop Buhari from visiting the state. Obasanjo, Northern Elite, Monarchs Warned APC Against Fielding Buhari – Akande

The pioneer Interim National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Chief Bisi Akande, has given an insight into the severe pressure mounted on the party by influential persons to make sure Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), now the President, did not emerge as the party’s candidate for the 2015 election. In his 559-page autobiography, titled ‘My Participations’, launched in Lagos on Thursday, Akande said persons like former President Olusegun Obasanjo and some unnamed elite, especially from the North, including royal fathers, were against Buhari becoming the party’s candidate. The former Osun State governor explained that an aristocratic leader from the North came to Osogbo, the state capital, to persuade the then governor, Rauf Aregbesola, to prevail on them to drop...

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday assured Nigerians and the global community of his administration’s resolve to strengthen all necessary mechanisms that will ensure another peaceful transfer of power. The President, who spoke at a virtual summit for democracy organised by President Joe Biden of the United States, assured that the 2023 general elections will be free and fair. According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, President Buhari also told participants that Nigeria will continue to support democratisation processes in West Africa, as well as the whole of the African continent. “As we countdown to our next general elections in 2023, we remain committed to putting in place and strengthening all necessary mechanisms to ensur...

We’re Not All Gloom And Doom, Are We? By Femi Adesina

Let’s go down memory lane. In May, 2016, President Muhammadu Buhari had led the Nigerian delegation to London to attend the global anti-corruption summit being hosted by the then British Prime Minister, David Cameron. We arrived London to the storm of reactions accompanying comments Cameron had made in a private conversation with the Queen of England, and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, in which he described Nigeria as “fantastically corrupt” alongside some other countries. The PM did not know that his unofficial comments were being picked by a nearby television microphone. The development played out while we were airborne from Nigeria to London, and after I had got the full perspectives of what happened, I went to brief our President. He listened carefully, as he usually...

No Longer‘An Army Of Anything Goes’ By Femi Adesina

There’s no institution that cannot atrophy or degenerate, if like a fish, it begins to rot from the head. And that was the story of the Nigerian Army at a point in time, when there was a deliberate policy to emasculate and debilitate it, incidentally by leadership that emerged from its very bowels. Our army had done exploits in Burma, in Congo, at different peace keeping operations in many parts of the world, but by 1993, it had deteriorated to become “an army of anything goes.” Like disorganized Boy Scouts. Pity! Why should we believe that unflattering appellation? Because it came from one of its very own, a well respected Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Salihu Ibrahim. Ibrahim had commanded the army from August 1990 to September 1993, and when he was retiring, he lamented that the...

They Said Nothing Was Happening…How About These? By Femi Adesina

As you read this piece, President Muhammadu Buhari and his team are in the French capital, attending the Paris Peace Forum, a gathering of about 30 Presidents and head of governments from around the world. The Nigerian leader is among the few that were asked to deliver a speech. On Wednesday afternoon, we had been at the Palais Elysee, the seat of the French government, where President Buhari paid an official visit to President Emmanuel Macron, who himself had been in Abuja in 2018. Impressive is a mild word to use for the spectacle. Earlier that Wednesday, President Buhari had been at the Shangri-La Hotel, to give a keynote address at the Nigeria International Partnership Forum, put together for Nigerian and French investing community. It was a roll call of the brightest and best in...

This Kumuyi Is Simply Different By Femi Adesina

He rarely speaks on things that do not have to do with the work of the Kingdom, which he is completely sold out to, and has been engrossed in for over 50 years. In fact, he exemplifies the words of the prophet that “he shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.” But someone stuck his fingers in the mouth of Pastor William Folorunsho Kumuyi, General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, recently, and the man had to speak. He didn’t cry or strive, and “a bruised reed he did not break,” smoking flax he did not quench. But the cleric gave some home truths on what the attitude of a true Christian should be to secular government, particularly of his own country. This was how it all happened. Professor Dapo Asaju, a cleric and academic, f...

Buhari’s Day Of Reckoning Has Come Because He Failed To Listen To Nigerians – Ex-President Obasanjo

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has taken a swipe at the Muhammadu Buhari-led presidency, saying its day of reckoning has come because it failed to listen to the people. Obasanjo also called for the creation of state police as a measure to tackle the ravaging insecurity in the country. The former president made the call while delivering his speech at a lecture titled, “Social responsibility in nation building,” to mark the 78th anniversary of Island Club in Lagos on Friday. He said only a safe environment could guarantee nation building. Obasanjo said, “I have said it before and I will say it again. Nigeria should have state police in all the states so that they can adequately tackle insecurity. Guaranteeing citizens a safe environment and round security is one thing a gov...
