Why State Police Is Not An Option —President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has explained why he believes that state police was not a good option for curbing insecurity in Nigeria. He made the remarks in an interview with Channels Television. Recall that on May 12, governors under the platform of Southern Nigeria Governors Forum demanded the creation of state police, review of revenue formula in favour of sub-nationals and true federalism. Nigeria’s current policing system is controlled by the Federal Government. President Buhari said there was a greater propensity for governors to abuse their powers with the creation of state police. President Buhari’s 2021 Christmas Message

I rejoice with Christians in Nigeria as they join fellow believers all over the world to celebrate this season. It is a special period that brings peoples of the world together with one purpose; to celebrate togetherness, joy, peace, and above all, to share love with one another through exchange of goodwill and gifts. For the second Christmas running, the world will not be able to celebrate as we used to in years past. The COVID-19 pandemic, with its attendant debilitating impact, has remained with mankind, mutating and leaving in its wake devastating consequences on the economy, social interaction, and curtailing certain freedoms. The silver lining, however, is that humanity has been able to rise up with one voice and purpose, to confront the foisted conditions. I want to u...

Electoral Act Amendment Bill: Senate Backs Down On Overriding Buhari, Refers Bill To Constituents

The Senate on Wednesday failed to override the veto of President Muhammadu Buhari, on the Electoral Act Amendment bill. The President of the Senate, Dr Ahmad Lawan,  after an executive session, said the lawmakers had decided to take the President’s rejection of the bill to their constituencies during Christmas and New Year holidays before deciding on the next line of action. Buhari had withheld assent to the Electoral Act amendment bill 2021, insisting that the inclusion of the mandatory direct primaries in the bill might pose financial, legal and security challenges. While the House of Representatives led by Femi Gabajabiamila had resolved to debate the matter after they returned from recess in January, the Senate remained adamant even as 73 senators reportedly resolved to overri...

House Of Representatives’ PDP Caucus Calls For Buhari’s Resignation

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Caucus of the House of Representatives has said Nigeria needs saving from the grip of President Muhammadu Buhari. A statement by O. K. Chinda, the Chairman of the PDP Caucus of the House of Representatives on December 20, Nigeria has been hijacked by terrorists and bandits who have turned communities into killing fields. "Unfortunately, the General who famously boasted of leading from the front is now missing in action," the PDP Caucus said. The statement read, "Nigeria, under the rulership of General Buhari, has been seized by hostage-takers - bandits and terrorists - who exact ransom demands on the poor and impoverished citizens and turn homesteads, hamlets, villages, towns and cities into killing fields. "The bloodletting unleashed by the h...

Electoral Act Amendment: Buhari Returns Bill To NASS, Faults Direct Primaries, Cites Insecurity

President Muhammadu Buhari has asked the National Assembly to remove the clause that has to do with direct primaries from the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. On Monday, the President, who stated this in his letter to the Senate, asked the National Assembly to remove the controversial clause on direct primaries from the bill and return the proposed law to him for assent. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, confirmed to Punch that Buhari had sent the letter to the National Assembly. But a source who was privy to the content of the letter said the President refused assent because political parties had their various constitutions that stipulated mode of primaries that should be adopted. According to the source, the President argued that it would ...

Buhari At 79: Lessons We’ve Learnt From Him By Femi Adesina

When he popped out of his mother’s womb 79 years ago in rustic Daura, now in Katsina State, nobody could have predicted that he would bestride the country, nay the world, like a colossus. Who could have predicted that a honest man, Mai Gaskiya, had come forth? Who could have foretold that he would rule the country twice, first as a soldier, and later, as a civilian, a democrat? And who could have prognosticated that he would perhaps be the politician with the greatest crowd in the history of the country, for a long time to come? But we’ve had all these, and more, in Muhammadu Buhari, the child of destiny, who turns 79 December 17, 2021. This country will never forget this President, will it? And for good. He came, he saw, and he’s conquering. I’m a student of Muhammadu Buhari. ...
