Gabon: Coup Attempt Foiled, Situation Under Control – Gabonese Government

A spokesperson for the government of Gabon has said the political situation in the country is "under control", following an attempted coup. Guy-Bertrand Mapangou told the BBC that four of the rebels had been arrested by the authorities. A fifth is on the run. Junior officers claimed they seized power "to restore democracy" in oil-rich Gabon, where the ailing leader's family has ruled for 50 years. Tanks and armed vehicles could be seen in the capital Libreville. A road safety officer had the misfortune of hitting a Benz G-wagon while drunk-driving. Road safety officers are usually dreaded by road users because of their eagerness to pounce on real and perceived road safety related infractions. It was therefore a shock to see one of such officials driving on the express fully drunk. It is not clear how the FRSC will handle this matter as Nigerians have been complaining about the many excesses of this body. Many major cities in the South-East were almost ghost towns today as there was a massive compliance with IPOB's sit-at-home order. Major roads, markets and motor parks were deserted. Commercial operations were non existent. Even the usually busy Niger bridge was deserted as no vehicular or human traffic was visible. IPOB claims that the order received 70% compliance while the Police in Anambra claims otherwise. In Anambra the order was totally complied with in Onitsha and Nkpor.
