Certificate Forgery: Court Admits More Exhibits Against Obaseki

The All Progressives Congress on Wednesday tendered two more documents in support of its allegation of certificate forgery leveled against the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, at the Federal High Court in Abuja. One of the documents was the original copy of a first-degree certificate awarded to Emmanuel Balogun and by the University of Ibadan on July 6, 1979. Obaseki had said he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics from the same university in the same year. The other document admitted as exhibit by the court was a report of a forensic document examiner, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr Raphael Onwuzuligbo. We Lack Power to Disqualify Obaseki – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that it lacks the power to investigate or disqualify candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo during the September 19 election of Governor Godwin Obaseki, over alleged forgery of the University of Ibadan’s (UI) certificate. The electoral commission noted that only a court order could disqualify a governorship candidate from participating in an election. A 24-hour curfew has been declared by the Godwin Obaseki led Edo state government. This curfew is to commence from 4pm today, the 19th of October across the state. The recruitment which is under the Edo Supporting Teachers to Achieve Results (EdoSTAR) Teaching Fellowship Programme will be spread across the state’s three senatorial districts.
