Five Barrels of Crude Oil Discharged into Rivers Environs, Shell Reveals

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) Limited revealed that five barrels of crude oil were discharged into environments of the Bodo community in Gokana Local Government Area, Rivers State. Drought Killed 70 Kenyan Elephants In One Year

Over 70 elephants have died in the last year as a result of the ongoing drought affecting all of East Africa, Kenya’s Tourism Minister Najib Balala has said. The animals were in Tsavo National Park, one of the country’s oldest parks. It is also one of the world’s largest wildlife reserves. The Kenyan authorities fear the ecosystem will experience more wildlife deaths if the drought continues. A number of giraffes have also died, said Mr Balala. The federal government has said that more than 90,000 people, mainly women and children, die annually from smoke and other complications from firewood. The Minister for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor, disclosed that 70 percent of Nigeria's population still depends solely on fuel wood in meeting their energy needs for cooking and heating. BREAKING: Gridlock as Fuel Tanker Bursts into Flames on Otedola Bridge

There is heavy traffic at the Berger-Alausa-Magodo axis of Lagos State after a fuel tanker burst into flames on Otedola bridge, along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, on Saturday. Reports in the media have it that the incident happened a few minutes to 6pm. The incident caused panic on the expressway as many vehicles made U-turn in a bid to avoid being engulfed by the fire. Some passengers were also seen alighting from vehicles hurriedly. Many passengers were also stranded at the Alausa Secretariat and toll gate bus stops. The Nigerian Red Cross Society, Enugu Chapter has asked residents of flood prone areas in Enugu State to relocate to safer ground as it aims to avert loss of lives and properties in the event of flood. The call was made when the group embarked on a sensitization campaign in Enugu along with other stakeholders to educate the residents on flood preparedness, mitigation and response.
