Belgium won the third place position this evening after beating England 2:0. The Belgians showed their intent with a 4th minute goal tapped in by Meunier. This score was maintained for much of the match as the Belgians appeared satisfied to sit back, maintain possession of the ball and try quick forays into the territory of the English. World Cup: Croatia Through to the Finals, Wins England 2:1

Croatia this evening sailed into the finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup after winning England 2:1 after extra time. Despite taking an early lead through a 5th minute Trippier goal, England gave up their lead in 68th minute when Perisic stabbed in Croatia's equalizer from a cross. After the game was levelled, Croatia had more chances to bury the game, with Ivan Perisic's shot hitting the inside of the upright. The game continued into extra time and in the 109th minute, Mandzukic scored the winner for Croatia. World Cup: Russia’s World Cup Ends as they Lose 3:4 on Penalties to Croatia

Despite scoring the first goal of the match, hosts Russia lost the game 3:4 on penalties to Croatia. After Cheryshev put Russia ahead in the 31st minute, it only took the Croatians 8 minutes to level the score through Kramaric's 39th minute header. The rest of regulation saw no goals from both sides despite their best efforts. Going into extra time, Vida headed in the winner for Croatia in the 101st minute, sending Croatia into the lead. Russia however equalized in the 115th minute through Fernandes, sending the game into penalties. Croatia went on the score four out of their five takes while Russia missed two of their five takes, ending it in a 3:4 score. Croatia will now take on England in the semi-finals.

World Cup: Brazil Crashes Out, Loses 1:2 to Belgium

The Brazilian team were this evening knocked out at the quarter finals of the World Cup after they lost 1:2 to Belgium. A 13th minute own goal by Fernandinho set the Belgians on course for the win. De Bruyne fired in the second for the Belgians in the 31 minutes, bringing the score to 2:0 which was how the first half ended. In the second half, Brazil made some changes and began to make a greater impact on the game. Their effort was rewarded in the 76th when Augusto nodded in a well placed Coutinho pass. Augusto missed another clear chance to bring the game level, as did Coutinho some minutes later. With this win, Belgium will now face France in the semi finals.

World Cup: England Escapes Narrowly, Wins Colombia on Penalties

England escaped a possible defeat to Colombia after the match went into extra time. The English team had taken the lead in the second half (having played a goalless first half) through a Harry Kane 57th minute penalty. It looked like the English were home and dry until Colombia's tall defender, Mina nodded in an equalizer in the 3rd minute of the 5 minute added time. This took the game into extra time. Seven men of the Nigerian Police Force have been reportedly gunned down by unknown armed attackers this afternoon at Abuja. The incident is said to have taken place at the Galadimawa Junction, off the International Airport Road. As at the time of filing this report full details of the incident was not yet known. World Cup: Belgium Survives Japan Scare, Wins 3:2

Belgium looked like they were surely on their way out when Japan scored the first two goals of the match in about 7 minutes of the resumption of the second half. This was after the first half ended goalless. Having played a goalless first half, the Japanese came in and shocked the Belgians with two quick goals. The first was scored in the 48 minute by Haraguchi. Inui followed 4 minutes later with the second, stunning Belgians and the rest of the world. Belgium had to quickly get themselves organized and were able to pull one back in the 69th minute through Vertonghen. Nigeria: Court Grants Dasuki Bail

Embattled former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki has been granted bail by an Abuja Federal High Court. In her ruling, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu stated that it was illegal for the defendant to have been held without trial as this violated his fundamental human right. World Cup: Senegal Drops Out, Loses 0:1 to Colombia

Senegal has crashed out of the World Cup after losing 0:1 to Colombia. Senegal was Africa's last representative in the tournament which means no African side made it out of the groups. A 74th minute goal from Colombia's Yerry Mina ensured the Africans did not proceed to the next round. The Nigerian Super Eagles this evening lost 1:2 to the Argentinians. In a match which promised to be highly competitive, Argentina came needing a win to qualify while Nigeria needed a draw. Messi scored his first goal and Argentina's first of the night in the 14th minute. That was however all that was seen of Messi as he was always surrounded by Nigerian defenders. In the second half, Nigeria equalized from the penalty spot after Leon Balogun was pulled down by Mascherano.
