Breaking News: Buhari Seeks to Confirm Tanko as CJN, Urges Quick Confirmation by Senate

Following the recommendation of the National Judicial Council that Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad be confirmed as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari has accepted the nomination and forwarded same to the Senate for confirmation. The NJC had made this recommendation on Wednesday and the President's acceptance was confirmed by the Senate President who presented Tanko's name to the house for confirmation. Breaking News: Shi’ites Stage Peaceful Protest In Lagos

The Shi'ite movement headed by the incarcerated Ibrahim Yaqoub El Zakzaky are currently staging a peaceful protest in Lagos following the more volatile protest in Abuja that resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals. The protest is again to call the Nigerian government to obey the several court orders that have asked that El Zakzaky to be released for treatment. While speaking during the protest, one of the spokespersons pointed out that El Zakzaky has about 21 million following and that if their leader dies in prison, it will spell doom for Nigeria as these 21 million followers are ready and willing to die for him. Breaking News: Rochas Okorocha and Wife Arrested by EFCC Operatives

Barely 24 hours after vacating office as the governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha and his wife have both been arrested by men of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Officers from the commission raided the former governor's house and effected the arrest. Reports have it that men from the commission have also sealed the former governor's university at Ogboko, Eastern Palm University. During his handover, Rochas had made some statements that indicated he might be aware of some plans to arrest him. He had warned that any attempt to silence him will see him fighting back. Breaking News: Tribunal Declares PDP Winner of Osun Gubernatorial Election

The Election Petitions Tribunal set up for the 2018 governorship election in Osun State has declared Ademola Adeleke winner of the election. The three-member panel said during its ruling in Abuja Friday afternoon that the rerun election that held on September 27, 2018, was illegal. The tribunal, therefore, deducted the votes scored by the APC candidate Gboyega Oyetola at the rerun after declaring the rerun illegal. Nigeria: School Building Collapse in Lagos, Many Feared Dead

Several victims, including school children are presently trapped under the rubbles of a three story building that suddenly collapsed in the morning at Ita-Faji area, Lagos Island. As part of effort to rescue the trapped pupils who were wailing under the rubbles, men of Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, LASEMA, Lagos State Fire Service, and other rescue teams have been dispatched to the scene. According to source, the floor of the building houses a school where pupils were in class when the tragedy struck. At press time efforts were on to ensure that trapped victims are brought out alive. Nigeria: INEC Postpones Election Result Announcement to 11am Monday

The Independent Electoral Commission has postponed to opening of the national collation center to 11am Monday morning. The commission had earlier told reporters that the collation center will be opening bu 6pm on Sunday 24th February 2019. With this shift, Nigerian's are concerned about what could happen to the results in the intervening hours. According to Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the reason for the postponement was because no state returning officer had gotten to Abuja with their results. Breaking News: Dollar Exchanges $1 to N184

In a shocking development, the exchange rate today dropped by half across board. Dollar to the Naira dropped from N360 to N184 while the Pound dropped from over N400 to N240. There is no clear indication of why this exchange rate is reflected on internation exchange rate calculators while the Central Bank website does not reflect these new exchange rate.   This looks like a move meant to influence the on-going elections. It will be recalled that the Presidency had earlier lamented the amount of foreign currency in circulation in the country. With this drop in the exchange rate, the value of any foreign currency in circulation is automatically halved. We shall await further developments on this issue.

Breaking News: Elections not Postponed – INEC

Following a rumour that INEC might be thinking of postponing the Presidential and house of assembly elections, INEC has come out to refute the rumour. According to Mr. Festus Okoye, a National commissioner in charge of voter education, elections will hold as planned. he called on voters to ignore the rumour and come out for the elections. According to him, the meeting with stakeholders had nothing to do with a possible decision to postpone the elections. He said "Yes we are in a meeting but we have not taken such decision. We are in an election period, and as commissioners we have to meet every time”.
