Shagari’s Grandson Reacts to Kano Blasphemy Sentence, Asks Christians Not to interfere in Islamic Affairs

Shehu Shagari’s grandson, Bello Shagari has reacted to the sentencing of a musician to death in Kano for blaspheming Prophet Muhammad, asking Christians not to interfere in Islamic affairs. Shagari disclosed this while reacting to the Upper Sharia Court’s judgement in Kano which sentenced a musician, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu to death for blaspheming Prophet Muhammad. Protesters set Sharif-Aminu’s ablaze in March 2020 after he was accused of blasphemy. Shagari was quoted by Sahara Reporters to have said, “Muslims should focus on their Islam, Christians should focus on their Christianity and disbelievers should focus on their disbelief. Everyone should practise what they believe. No belief should bother another in anyway and anyone who does so, has intruded. Fact! Peace.” However, whe...

OPM and the Aluu Debacle: Fate of Patients as Church Shuts Free Hospital Because of Community Levies

On Sunday, the 5th of July, the General Overseer of Omega Power Ministries (OPM), Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere announced plans to shut down OPM specialist hospital in Aluu community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State. The closure came as a protest to what the Apostle Chinyere described as indiscriminate levies imposed on the hospital by the host community. This he said came despite the selfless services that OPM renders to the community without any financial gain. The hospital which was opened in April 18, 2019 to offer 24 hours services to Nigerians irrespective of their religious affiliation was famed for offering free medical care especially to women and children. The charitable gesture has been met with an undesirable reaction from the host community prompting th...

We Shall Not Bow – Femi Fani-Kayode

"I am the leader of Uthman Danfodio dynasty. I have never seen where in the hundred books that Uthman Danfodio said Nigeria belongs to the Fulani. What he wrote was the role of Islam in leadership, governance etc. He never mentioned of conquering any particular land or claimed ownership of any territory. People make comments that Jihad is to Islamise every country, but I said no. Danfodio never came to Islamise any country, he preached against bad government. That fake write-up was by those who don’t want peace in this country and we had denounced that. I am the National Patron of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN). It has been in existence for 44 years. There are two other organisations that I know, but others I don’t know. Please verify from us before you put blame ...

Bishop Matthew Kukah’s Homily at the Funeral Mass of Seminarian Michael Nnadi

Homily of His Lordship Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah at the Funeral Mass of Seminarian Michael Nnadi at Good Shepherd Seminary Kaduna (11th February 2020). 1. We have gathered around the remains of Michael in supplication but also as solemn witnesses to the penetrating darkness that hovers over our country. I have the rare honour of being considered the principal mourner in this ugly tragedy. It is not an honour that I am worthy of receiving. The honour belongs to God Almighty who created Michael and marked out this moment and pathway for him. The greater honour goes to his immediate family whose devotion as Catholics laid the foundation for his faith and vocation. To his grandmother, Mrs. Eunice Nwokocha, a most simple, beautiful and devout Catholic woman whose devotion and dedication sa...

Opinion: A Clarion Call for “CAN” to be Banned in Nigeria by Ibrahim Jalo Jalingo

The Christian Association of Nigeria CAN is becoming a threat to peaceful coexistence of Nigeria as an indivisible sovereign country. The Christian body resorted to inviting foreign countries of United States, Britain and Israel to invade Nigeria and handover the country to them, in their selfish interest of enslaving other religious faiths in Nigeria. 2. To us, the so-called CAN body is nothing but one of the numerous religious bodies in Nigeria. Therefore, it should not be regarded as a frightening organization to either citizens or government in all ramifications. It should not be also allowed to be buttressing unnecessary utterances and does what it likes at any time. 3. To all right thinking persons in Nigeria and international countries, Boko Haram is a terrorist group that kil...

Opinion: Push for Political Islam is Insensitive and Needless, Portends a Grave Danger to Security and Stability

By Majeed Dahiru The rise to power of President Muhammadu in 2015 birthed a far right political culture that sparked off a wave of ethno-geographic and religious populism across the Muslim north. President Buhari’s reputation as a champion of political Islam and a defender of northern interests was reinforced by his elevation of nepotism to a near state policy, which has resulted in the manifest domination of his Muslim northern section of the country over others in the scheme of things in his government. Securing an overwhelming victory throughout the Muslim north in his 2019 re-election bid was a form of vote of confidence on his provincial proclivities that has beatified ethno-geographic irredentism and religious bigotry as political virtues to be democratically rewarded in the reg...

Opinion: Much Ado About Arabic on Naira Notes and Nigerian Army Flag by Reno Omokri

Recently, a lawyer sued the Federal Government on the issue of Arabic inscriptions on our currency and on the Nigerian Army’s logo. The fellow, Malcolm Omirhobo, wants the Federal High Court to declare as “illegal, unlawful, and unconstitutional to allow the Nigerian Army logo to be adorned, and inscribed in Arabic language, instead of the official English language or Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo which are the three main languages or ethnic groups in Nigeria.” I see this as a function of ignorance, and I will explain. Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo are all spoken languages. None of them are written languages, although there does exist some limited form of writing among a few Nigerian tribes. The Hausa people adapted Arabic into the ajami script, and the Igbo have an ancient pictogram writing st...
