Nigeria: NLC Insists on Strike Commencing 28th Sept. 2020

The Nigerian Labour Congress has doubled down on its position that there will be a Nation-wide strike from the 28th of September 2020 unless their demands are met. In a post shared on their Facebook Page, the union said "STRIKE BEGINS TOMMOROW MONDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER, UNLESS OUR DEMANDS ARE MET." STRIKE BEGINS TOMMOROW MONDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER, UNLESS OUR DEMANDS ARE MET. Posted by Nigeria Labour Congress HQ on Sunday, September 27, 2020 It will be recalled that a court ordered the strike to be put on hold, an order which the union does not appear to be willing to obey. The Federal Government has invited the union's leaders for a meeting so it is yet to be seen if the strike will be called off before tomorrow the 28th of September. We will keep you posted.

774,000 FG Jobs: States Get Extension

  Some states that have been unable to complete the recruitment process of artisans for the 774,000 Special Public Works (SPW) programme of the Federal Government have been granted one week extension. Minister of State for Labour and Employment Festus Keyamo said the October 1 commencement of the programme is still on course. Keyamo said on Monday that “There was a board meeting of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) chaired by me.   We looked at the situation and said in deserving cases we may extend for a few days, for some states that have not submitted their final lists. “We are still looking at October 1 to begin nationwide. The management of Air Peace Airlines has reconsidered its earlier decision to sack about 70 pilots following the intervention of the Federal. The recall of some of the sacked pilots was agreed upon after a meeting convened by Sentaor Hadi SIrika, minister of aviation, between the airline’s management and the leadership of the National Association of Airline Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE). The United Nations (UN) cautions that Africa and the rest of the world could witness a “generational catastrophe” due to the closure of schools around the world amid the COVID-19 scare. This was disclosed by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a communique. Reports suggest as at mid-July, at least 160 countries had closed their schools keeping more than 1 billion students at home while at least 40 million children have missed out on pre-school. Napoli has completed the club record signing of Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen from Ligue 1 side, Lille. Osimhen who bagged 18 goals in 38 appearanced for Lille in the just concluded 2019-20 season joins Napoli for a club record €50 million (£45m/$59m) fee. Lagos Doctors Embark on a 3-day Warning Strike over Safety and Welfare Concerns

Doctors in Lagos state, Nigeria under the auspices of the Medical Guild in Lagos, will begin a three-day warning strike from today, 13th July, 2020 due to safety and welfare issues. Chairman of the Guild, Dr Oluwajimi Sodipo disclosed the position of the association at a briefing on Sunday in Lagos. The Guild consists of medical doctors employed by the Lagos State Government. Sodipo said that the association exempted members working in the state’s COVID-19 isolation centres and the industrial action would commence on Monday, July 13 and end on 16. The federal government of Nigeria has announced a July 8 resumption date for domestic flights in the country as it implements a further relaxation of the COVID-19 induced lockdown. The resumption of local flights comes at a time when the West African nation is experiencing daily spike in the number of confirmed cases of the virus. Authorities say airport in the capital city of Abuja and Lagos are scheduled to resume on July 8, Kano, Port Harcourt, Owerri and Maiduguri will restart on July 11 while others will start on July 15.
