SASU Condemns the Violent and Criminal Actions of the Zimbabwean Government on its People and Student Leaders

The Southern African Student Union (SASU) is utterly disgusted and dismayed by the ongoing criminal behaviour being carried out by security forces in Zimbabwe. The corrupt Zimbabwean government continues to cripple its own economy and creates its own problems, this is owing to a failure to manage the economy and other geopolitical factors. Zimbabwean citizens like all other civilians in a democratic state have the right to protest, a right which is protected by the constitution of that country and an established practice globally. It is criminal and unjust for the regime of President Mnangwangwa to respond to the peoples outcry, by use of the military, for the military is trained to protect borders and not instill fear and discipline amongst its people. The abuse of the security cluster...

Following the outrage, the choirmaster of the school said he was proud of their performance. According to him, "We are proud of our Xhosa tradition. We are proud of 'inkciyo'. We are proud of Xhosa women and girls." However, the basic education minister sees it differently. She described it as an "indignity [which] goes against the values of our cultures". She went on to say "It is completely inappropriate on the part of educators and they should know better than to expose teenage girls to ...

Nigeria: Multi Choice, DSTV/GOTV to Shut Down

Nigerian authorities have notified the management of MultiChoice DSTV/GOTV that their operations in Nigeria will come to an end in 2019 as their license expires June next year. According to a letter to that effect (seen by Daily Times reporter) issued on Tuesday by the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation(NBC), the license issued to them in 2014 by NBC will not be renewed because it was not in line with Digital Switch Over (DSO) White Paper. If Multichoice DSTV/GOTV will ever operate in Nigeria again after expiration of its license, the only option left for them is to go to licensed Signal Distribution company, that is Pinnacle Communications Ltd or ITS. He and senior members of the African National Congress (ANC) held talks on Sunday but no details of their meeting have been released. Facing corruption allegations, Mr Zuma was replaced as ANC leader in December. Party leaders, who may be trying to oust Mr Zuma before his State of the Nation address later this week, will hold an emergency meeting on Monday. Julius Malema, an opposition leader and former ANC member, said on Twitter that Mr Zuma had been asked to stand down but had refused. Mr Zuma, who spent time in prison for his part in the fight against apartheid, is most of the way through his second - and last - term as president. Under his rule the civil...
