South Africa: Student Union Threatens to Close Schools Across SA Over Covid-19 Fears

The Congress of South African Students (Cosas) have said the body will be “shutting down all schools over SA” from Monday. The union said in a statement, “We want to put it on record that we are not giving anyone an option but we are taking a radical approach, we will save the lives of innocent scholars by hook or crook.” Cosas said it would mobilise at a school in Cape Town where it believed a Covid-19 case had been reported, “from there we will move to any other school that is operating”.   This comes after recent reopening of schools in South Africa. Osun State Government Debunks Stopping Payment of Allocation to Local Government Accounts

The government of Gboyega Oyetola of Osun state has debunked rumours that the state government has stopped direct payment of monthly allocations to the accounts of local governments in the state. This was disclosed by Prince Adebayo Adeleke, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in a statement. He said reports of the state asking banks to cease direct payment to Local Governments Councils in the state are baseless and reiterated Osun government’s commitment to Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) guidelines and regulations. A joint statement by the Police, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has called for accelerated hearing of rape cases in Nigeria. This comes on the back of several rape charges in the country. The call was made in a statement issued after a meeting by the organisations at the Force Headquarters on Saturday in Abuja, Nigeria. The screening committee set up by the All Progressive Congress (APC) has disqualified incumbent Governor, Godwin Obaseki from contesting the party’s forthcoming primary election. The chairman of the screening panel- Jonathan Ayuba disclosed this update during presentation of their report to the national chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja on Friday.
