Protesters who are demanding for scrapping of Special Anti-robbery Squad of the Nigerian police clashed with police operatives in Abuja on Friday.

Reports say police fired teargas and shot indiscriminately in a bid to disperse the protesters in the nation’s capital.

A video which surfaced online shows protesters scampering for safety.

The protesters in the video could be heard shouting “they are shooting at us”, “don’t kill us with teargas”, “you must #EndSARS”.

A protester identified as @BrianJDenis on Twitter, tweeted “Police officers have opened fire at us with live bullets at Central Area, Abuja. Some people are injured.”

In a related development, Mohammed Adamu, the Inspector-General of Police, condemned the violent attack on policemen and damage to police operational vehicles by #EndSARS protesters in Ughelli, Delta State, on Thursday.

He regretted the unfortunate death of Corporal Etaga Stanley attached to ‘A’ Division, Ughelli and ordered a probe into the circumstances leading to her death.

Reacting to the incident, police spokesman, DCP Frank Mba said the protesters also made away with an AK47 and 25 rounds of live ammunition belonging to the deceased officer.

The IGP in a statement titled, ‘#EndSARS protesters go berserk, murder one policeman, injure another in Delta State’, directed the Commissioner of Police, Delta State, to carry out a discrete investigation into the unfortunate incident, root out the perpetrators and bring the killer protesters to book.

He added that the force will not tolerate any further attack on its personnel by any individual or group protesting for whatever reason.
