Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai has insisted on his support for rotation of presidency to the southern region in 2023.
He disclosed this while speaking on Channel TV’s Sunday Politics, saying that based on arrangement, the presidency should be shifted to the South after President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure.
EL-Rufai said such arrangement existed during the time of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which prompted former President Olusegun Obasanjo of Southern extraction to hand over power to late Umaru Yar’Adua from the North.
According to him, even though the constitution of the APC did not make any provision for zoning, it is ideal that power be rotated to the south in 2023.
“After Buhari, what is honourable is for the northern politicians to put their support for southern candidate. I don’t believe in zoning but that is my opinion. We have this arrangement, we should maintain it.
“I don’t believe any part of Nigeria has a monopoly to power. We have an understanding, let us stick to it. In 1998, this nation has a consensus that power should go to the southwest.
“In 2023, I believe that all parties should present candidates from the south,” he said.
