Northern Ugandans Face Starvation As Hunger Bites – UN

More than half a million people in Uganda’s north-eastern region of Karamoja are facing a high risk of hunger and starvation, according to a study by several UN agencies. Those affected are about 40% of the population in the region. In Moroto district alone, more than half of the population goes without any meal for a full day and night at least three times a month, the study found. The region has also witnessed high levels of malnutrition, especially among children under the age of five. In some cases, mothers were forced to feed their babies on a local brew made from sorghum. Suspected Islamists Kill At Least 18 In East Congo Attack

Suspected Islamists killed at least 18 people in a village raid in eastern Congo on Sunday night, local sources said, while fighting resumed with the M23 rebel group in a neighbouring province. Fighters believed to be from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) killed residents and burned down houses in the village of Otomabere, in Irumu territory, Ituri province, said a witness, a local chief and a local human rights group. Congolese army spokesman Jules Ngongo confirmed the ADF attack without giving a death toll, and said Congolese forces were in pursuit of the assailants. The ADF is a Ugandan militia that moved to eastern Congo in the 1990s. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni says his government will not intervene in the current economic situation amid a rising cost of living. Prices of petroleum products, imported raw materials and food have been rising in recent months, a crisis being experienced globally following the war in Ukraine. In a televised national address on Sunday night, Mr Museveni said that government subsidies or removal of import taxes would collapse the economy. Three Lions Electrocuted in Uganda

Three lions have been found dead in one of the best-known national parks in Uganda after possibly being electrocuted, a conservation official said on Tuesday. The three lionesses were found dead near the fence of a private lodge in Queen Elizabeth National Park, a popular tourist destination The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) says it suspects that the adult lioness and two cubs may have been electrocuted. UWA spokesman Bashir Hangi described the deaths of the animals as a "big blow" in a country with only 400 lions left. A Ugandan athlete who went missing in Japan on July 16 after failing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics has been spotted at Nagoya Station in central Japan by CCTV, news agency Kyodo reported on Monday citing a police source. Uganda’s Olympic delegation said on Friday weightlifter Julius Ssekitoleko had been registered as missing from a team training camp in Izumisano, some 200 kilometres south-west of Nagoya. Uganda: President Museveni Imposes Tax on Social Media Usage to Curb Gossip

A new law has been passed by the Ugandan parliament to impose a social media tax on its citizens. The law which is billed to take effect from 1 July will see Ugandans paying 200 shillings ($0.05) as daily levy for the use of social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and others. While pushing for the law, President Yoweri Museveni said that the use of these social media platforms greatly increased gossip. The President said the funds that will be generated from this tax will help the government manage the effects of gossip locally known as "olugambo".
