Tinubu Can’t Move Nigeria Forward – Suswam

Former Governor of Benue State and Senator representing Benue North-East Senatorial District in the 9th National Assembly, Gabriel Suswam, has launched scathing criticism against the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, claiming it lacks the capacity to improve Nigeria's economic fortunes. In an interview on Channels Television's Newsnight program, Suswam articulated his views on the current economic state of the nation and his assessment of the Tinubu-led administration's policies. Suswam commenced by reflecting on the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, opining that the "Change" mantra adopted during Buhari's tenure did not deliver the anticipated positive outcomes. He argued that the economic policies implemented during those eight years laid the groundwork for the ...

The Rule of Law and the Credibility of Leadership

Still on the identity crisis and controversies that have continued to haunt the Nigerian citadel of power since the February 25, 2023 presidential elections. There is this saying: "IT IS NOT TITLES THAT HONOUR MEN, BUT MEN THAT HONOUR TITLES." The lofty titles that decorate people in power have little meaning if there is a hollowness and falsehood underneath them. Such titles which adorn those in public office mean nothing if they are not original and are fake if those who bear them have no honour to support the weight of the titles they carry. In situations where there is public doubt as to the veracity and authenticity of these titles and the claims behind them, it is the judiciary's role, when called upon, to uphold the honour of the titles through transparent rulings. Only th...

Chicago State University: Another Classmate Surfaces for Tinubu, Swears Oath in Court

The legal battle between President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar regarding Tinubu's academic records from Chicago State University has taken an intriguing turn. Olajide Adeniji, who claims to be a classmate of the former Lagos Governor, has testified under oath in a United States district court that he knows Tinubu and that they contested against each other in the race for the presidency of the Accounting Society Club at the Department of Business Administration/Accounting in the same institution. This development comes just two weeks after another individual, public affairs analyst Durojaiye Ogunsanya, asserted that he was a coursemate of President Tinubu at Chicago State University. Ogunsanya stated during an appearance on TVC's 'This Morning' show that they bo...

APC Denies Reintroduction of Fuel Subsidy, Labels Claims “Fake News”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed claims that the administration of President Bola Tinubu has reintroduced fuel subsidy, asserting that government interventions were aimed at ensuring price stability and predictability. Reports had circulated alleging that the government spent a staggering N169.4 billion in August to maintain the fuel pump price at N620 per liter. These reports were seized upon by the opposition as evidence of the administration's purported return to fuel subsidy. In a statement released on Monday night, the APC vehemently denied the accusations, categorically stating that such payments did not constitute a revival of the fuel subsidy scheme that had been criticized for its economic implications in the past. The ruling party also took issue with P...

Tinubu’s Ministerial List Finally Presented to the Senate

After much anticipation, the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, finally presented the ministerial list of former President Bola Tinubu before the Senate on Thursday. Gbajabiamila, the immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives, arrived at the Senate Chambers and presented the list to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, at precisely 01:19 pm. Akpabio informed the senators that the list was dated July 27, 2023, and titled "Request For Confirmation Of Ministerial-Nominees." He further disclosed that additional nominations would be sent to the Senate in due course. Subsequently, Akpabio proceeded to read the ministerial list, which included a total of 28 nominees. Tinubu's nominations have been the subject of public interest, and the first set of names r...

Opinion: If Tinubu is Not Disqualified by the Court, Forget about Justice in Nigeria – Opinion

I have carefully perused the Petition of APM versus Tinubu, Shetima, APC and INEC and all I can say is that it appeared too mundane, but carries the strongest venom against Tinubu, Shetima, APC and INEC.  Many looked down on the case and say that the Supreme Court has already determined the issue of double nomination. However, a close look at the Petition will show that the case was never about double nomination of Shetima, but one of invalid nomination. The core of the case is that as at the time Tinubu nominated his running mate, he himself was no longer a candidate by virtue of the a combine provisions of the Constitution and Electoral Act, 2022 in Section 142 (1) and Section 33 of the Constitution and Electoral Act, respectively.  Let me bring you closer to the fact, l...

President Bola Tinubu Set to Return to Nigeria Ahead of Sallah Celebrations

Nigeria's President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is expected to return to the country on Tuesday, June 27, following a short private visit to London, United Kingdom. This news comes just a few days after the President traveled to London from Paris, where he participated in a summit focusing on "A New Global Financing Pact." The President's return is scheduled a day before the Sallah celebrations, and he is expected to spend the holiday in Lagos, according to a source close to the Presidency. The confirmation of President Tinubu's imminent return was announced on Sunday by a source within the Presidency. Barring any last-minute changes, the President's return plans remain unchanged, and an advance team has already been dispatched to ensure a smooth arrival and transition. It was reported on S...

Breaking: Tinubu Dissolves Boards of Parastatals, FG Agencies etc.

President Bola Tinubu has made a significant decision by approving the immediate dissolution of the Governing Boards of all Federal Government parastatals, agencies, institutions, and government-owned companies. This move aims to bring about a restructuring and fresh approach in the governance of these entities. The announcement came through a statement released on Monday by the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Willie Bassey. He clarified that the directive excludes boards, commissions, and councils listed in the third schedule, part one section 153 (i) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The exclusion means that agencies such as the Nigeria Judicial Council, Code of Conduct Bureau, Council of State,...

An Open Letter to the Chief Justice of Nigeria on Transparency and Accountability In Court Proceedings – Adebowale Aluko

An open letter from a frontline legal practitioner to the CJN My Lord, I write, as a concerned member of the Nigerian bar, regarding a subject which has generated controversy among members of the bar and indeed the larger public in the past week. Confidence in the judiciary is at an all-time low.  On 22 May 2023, at the opening ceremony of the annual conference of the National Association of Women Judges, Your Lordship urged judges sitting in election petition matters across the country to do substantive justice and eschew technicalities, in order to restore the confidence of the public in the judiciary. It is against this backdrop that I write in relation to the directive of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), prohibiting mobile phones and other electronic d...

Opinion: Nigeria’s Election Highlights Anglo-American Missteps – M. Page

Nigeria’s just concluded presidential elections have been focusing minds in London and Washington. Like tens of millions of Nigerian voters, Anglo-American officials realized what was at stake. Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy and is on track to be the third most populous country in the world by 2045. The UK and the US have enduring strategic interests in Nigeria, which are threatened by Nigeria’s kleptocratic ruling class’s tolerance of – and complicity in – democratic backsliding, grand corruption and gross human rights violations. The new administration faces a daunting array of challenges, from underdevelopment to insecurity, fiscal pressures and poor governance, which went unaddressed under outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari. But over the last several years, the UK and US h...
