Nigeria: You were not Brought in to Lose Elections – Senator Lawal Shuaibu to Oshiomhole

Embattled chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress seems to be sinking each day as speculations of his removal as chairman of the party continues to gain momentum. The results of the just concluded elections and the prospects of the ruling party in the 9th assembly are not making things any easier for him. In a recent statement credited to  Senator Lawal Shuaibu, Adams Oshiomhole was practically given a scolding. The Senator is credited with saying "We had 23 States in 2015, but after the 2019 elections we lost 7 States! We also had 60 Senators in 2015 at the end of the election count, we now end up with 57 Senators in 2019! You were not brought in to lose election, It is absolutely unacceptable! What this entails is that for any Senator to become a presiding Officer he ...

Nigeria: Buharig: The Inauguration of an Illegitimate President by Farooq Kperogi

Today, Nigeria will inaugurate an illegitimate president who unashamedly stole someone else’s electoral mandate in broad daylight. Buhari (whom most people now call “Buharig” because of the unprecedentedly crude electoral heist he perpetrated in February) and the cabal of corrupt, clueless, and unconscionable provincials who rule on his behalf instructed their minions to rig the last presidential election because they knew Buhari had not a snowball’s chance in hell of winning the election. In spite of their rigging, however, Buhari still came up short. He lost to Atiku by nearly 2 million votes from their own rigged figures. So he ordered INEC to invent arbitrary figures and proclaim him winner. And degenerate, unprincipled, and morally compromised Mahmood Yakubu who has gone down in ...

Opinion: Who Is Afraid of Atiku Abubakar? by Femi Aribisala.

There are indications today’s APC government is not averse to using the Shugaba playbook on Atiku. These are very interesting times in Nigeria.  The APC government has reportedly won a major election, but it is finding it difficult, if not impossible, to celebrate and enjoy its victory.  Before the champagne could be uncorked, Atiku Abubakar filed a case in court challenging the result, claiming it was fraudulent from start to finish. But this was a challenge unlike any other that Nigeria has seen before.  Out of the blue, Atiku produced another set of results different from the one declared by INEC showing that he had actually won the election.  Except that this other result also came from INEC.  As a matter of fact, it was retrieved from the INEC server and it was authenticated by ...

Nigeria: Ortom Blames the Devil for Benue Killings, Calls for Prayers

Samuel Ortom, the Governor of Benue State, has called on people in the state to seek divine intervention to the rising crime in the state, which he identified as the work of the "devil". Orton made the appeal appeal on Saturday at the NKST Church, Iortyer in Makurdi, capital of the state. He encouraged the people to participate in a one-week prayer and fasting programme organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in conjunction with the state government, starting next Monday, stressing that only the devil could instigate human beings to kill and destroy. “We must therefore collectively approach the throne of grace by going into sincere prayers coupled with repentance and sustained fasting particularly against the rising wave of crime because such problems emanate from ...

Nigeria: Senate Overrules Buhari, Passes Seven Bills He Earlier Rejected

The Senate has passed seven of the at least 16 bills rejected so far this year by President Muhammadu Buhari. The bills are the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB), National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism Bill, National Research and Innovation Council Bill, Stamp Duties Act (Amendment) Bill, National Agricultural Seed Council Bill, Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme Fund (Amendment) Bill and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Act 2010 (Amendment) Bill. Buhari had expressed reservations about the constitutionality of passing the bills into law, and therefore wrote the Senate to reconsider them. The upper chamber also initiated moves to the override the President’s veto on the Fourth Alteration Bill No.28 — a constitutional amendment that seeks to mandat...

Nigeria: Let Buhari Be Subjected to DNA Testing – Nnamdi Kanu to Atiku

The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, who is on the search list of the Nigerian government, has decided to offer a legal advice to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Kanu who spoke on a live broadcast on Sunday, told Atiku to ask President Muhammadu Buhari, to go for a DNA test to prove his originality. DNA test is a deoxyribonucleic acid that contains the genetic code and information of every single individual on earth. His words, “I will offer free legal advice to Atiku live on air in the hope that they will use it because it is obvious Atiku won the election and APC are deploying all instruments of coercion at the disposal of the Nigerian state to deny him his mandate. “Between Atiku and the man o...

Opinion: Nigeria Will not Survive the 2019 Presidential Election – Femi Aribisala

What we witnessed in the recently concluded election was the death knell of democracy in Nigeria. For those of us who had hoped against hope, the 2019 presidential election has proved to be the last straw.  We are now convinced that Nigeria is a hopeless case.  This country is not just a major disappointment; it is decidedly firmly on the trajectory of a future break up. Today, the silence in the Nigerian political space is deafening.  Just look back to 2015 and before, when there was vibrant debate about almost everything under the sun.  But now it is “siddon look.”  We just had an election that was no election and more like selection.  It was even more a mini civil-war, characterized by killings, voter-suppression and intimidation, ballot-snatching and falsification of results. ...

Nigeria: WAEC Certificate Not Required for Presidency – Keyamo

Festus Keyamo has argued that one does not need to have a WAEC certificate to become President of Nigeria. Keyamo made this assertion while featuring as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics. He said “There are other levels of qualifications to run for the office of President. In fact, if you have occupied the public office for a reasonable length of time, by the provisions of the constitution, you do not even need a WAEC certificate to become President of Nigeria”. Keyamo who is director strategic communications of President Muhammadu Buhari, 2019 presidential campaign, also argued that Buhari’s certificate is not in question because WAEC itself confirmed that the President passed his examination and was issued a certificate.
