Opinion: Push for Political Islam is Insensitive and Needless, Portends a Grave Danger to Security and Stability

By Majeed Dahiru The rise to power of President Muhammadu in 2015 birthed a far right political culture that sparked off a wave of ethno-geographic and religious populism across the Muslim north. President Buhari’s reputation as a champion of political Islam and a defender of northern interests was reinforced by his elevation of nepotism to a near state policy, which has resulted in the manifest domination of his Muslim northern section of the country over others in the scheme of things in his government. Securing an overwhelming victory throughout the Muslim north in his 2019 re-election bid was a form of vote of confidence on his provincial proclivities that has beatified ethno-geographic irredentism and religious bigotry as political virtues to be democratically rewarded in the reg...

You – A Platform For Social Change

14th January 2020   Most people want to be commended, or valued, or “blessed” after they have done a good deed. Most of us want to be recognised after we have done something helpful. This is perfectly normal, and it is us being human. Other people though, live at a higher level. One of them was Kaspar Nützel. Very few have heard of him, but millions know about his champion the monk Professor Martin Luther who officially started off the Protestant Reformation in Europe when in 1517 he reportedly nailed his Ninety-five Theses, a theological argument to the door of Wittenburg Church. Kaspar Nützel was a nobleman from Nuremberg in Germany. Luther's Ninety-five Theses had been written in Latin, a language that only scholars and not the ordinary citizen could understand. Without be...

Opinion: Are You A Marlian? – Bayo Adeyinka

It looks harmless- just ordinary dancing steps. Great legwork and body movements. Very rhythmic and colourful. It's just a fad. And like all other fads, it will come, be around for a while and then expire. Ar least, we've had other fads and none lasted forever. Fads come and fads go. Another one will soon replace this Marlian Fad. Inside life. Right? I'm not willing to accept this Marlian craze as just a fad. It's not only banal but it actually plays down social vices such as fraud and debauchery. It goes beyond some seemingly harmless dancing steps. There is a very subliminal but subtle indoctrination going on that encourages rebellion and makes a fraudulent lifestyle acceptable. Just listen to the lyrics of Am I A Yahoo Boy and lines like "Maga to fun mi lowo steady se Karin wa ko...

Nigerian Culture or Alternative Culture?

1st January 2020 Living in Nigeria, it is tiring to hear the usual response of, "This is Nigeria" or "This is not the UK" or "Are you not a Nigerian?", in the face of obvious wrongdoing that I have challenged. In any country the predominant culture is the one that characterises the country, and is the one that citizens are known for, and labelled by. For instance consider two foreign travellers arriving at London’s Heathrow airport. Both are males of the same age and social class, both are attended to by the same Immigration Officer, but one carries a Japanese passport, and the other carries a Nigerian passport. Japanese are renown for being law-abiding and having a tidy, productive little country. The Immigration Officer knowing facts about the cultures of the two countries where th...

Opinion: Endless Borrowing Will Lead to Endless Sorrowing by Atiku Abubakar

John Quincy Adams once said “there are two ways to conquer and enslave a nation. One is by the sword. The other is by debt.” He may have very well been referring to Nigeria of the last three years. Barely two weeks ago, I warned during my Founder’s Day lecture at the American University of Nigeria, Yola, that Nigeria had taken almost as much foreign debt in the last three years, as she had taken in the thirty years before 2015 combined. Now that is frightening. And very true. Frightening, not just because of the amount, but because after such unprecedented borrowing, we have emerged as the world headquarters for extreme poverty and the global capital for out of school children. It begs the question: what were the funds used for? I have said it time and again. The business of governm...

Opinion: Punch Newspapers, Kperogi and their Hypocritical Lamentations by Ikechukwu Eluigwe

How sincere is he who, having an elephant before him, uses a dog to give an example of a very large animal? How sincere is he, who having a dolphin before him, uses a frog to give an example of an aquatic animal? How sincere is he, who having a lion before him, uses a pussy cat as an example of a fierce predator? There are examples we use to buttress a point that will actually reveal more to a wise audience than just what the example was meant to buttress. Punch Newspapers have been in the news because of their lamentation over Buhari's draconian rule; before then, Farooq Kperogi had rendered his own lamentations over the same thing. In their lamentations, they both sought to validate their positions by giving examples of Buhari's despotism. And something strange happens: the no-mention...

Nigeria: DSS Invade Court while in Session to Rearrest Sowore Despite Court Order (Video)

Officers of the Department of State Services today stormed a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja in an attempt to rearrest Omoyele Sowore, convener of the Revolution Now Movement, and his co-defendant, Bakare. In an unprecedented event, lawyers and other onlookers witnessed a total disrespect for the judiciary as even the Judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, had to be escorted to her chambers as a result of the disruption. Sowore's supporters fully resisted the attempt at rearresting him even after the court had expressly ordered that he be released and the DSS fined N100,000.00. The presiding Judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, had yesterday threatened the Director of the DSS with arrest for the continued flaunting of court orders and Nigerians had thought that the DSS had finally decided to obe...

Nigeria: Northern Borders Still Open for Business – Gani Adams

Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Abiodun Ige Adams, has urged the Federal government to fix the Lagos – Badagry road, saying such move will boost the Nigerian economy and further expose the tourism potentials of Badagry as a whole. Speaking during the 2019 edition of the Olokun Festival in Badagry, Adams expressed worry over the closure of the Nigeria – Benin border, insisting that the closure of the border was suspicious, with huge implications on the entire Southwest. “The road leading to Badagry town and its environs are in deplorable stage and nobody even cares. For the past seven years, this town had been abandoned with little facilities I have said it severally that this road is bad.The road has become death traps for commuters plying the road daily. For instance, travelin...
