Why Buhari Didn’t Remove Petrol Subsidy – Femi Adesina

Femi Adesina, media aide to President Muhammadu Buhari has explained why the president failed to remove petrol subsidy. Adesina during an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday said the government needs to carefully consider its options before arriving at a decision. Recall that former President Goodluck Jonathan had in January 2012 faced stiff opposition when he attempted to remove subsidy on petrol. Consequently, he reversed the decision. However, Buhari had in 2015 stated that there was no justifiable reason to end the fuel subsidy regime. He said that its removal would compound the economic woes of the people. INEC Sets Aside 8,809 BVAS As Backup For Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has disclosed that additional Bimodal Voters Accreditation System, BVAS, machines have been imported for the 2023 general elections. The electoral umpire took delivery of the last batch of the machines on Tuesday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, noting that it conforms to its contingency arrangement for every critical election material. Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, in an interview on Wednesday, said the commission would deploy more than 194,464 BVAS machines in 176,846 polling units nationwide. EFCC Uncovers N13bn Illegal Fuel Subsidy Payments

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has recovered an estimated N13bn as proceeds of illegal payments made under the subsidy regime between 2017 and 2021. This was contained in the National inherent risk assessment of money laundering and terrorist financing in the Nigerian extractive sector document obtained by Punch from the website of the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit. The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has spoken against the alleged killing of a Delta-based doctor identified as Uyi Iluobe, by relatives of a patient. The incident reportedly happened on Saturday in Oghara, Delta State. The NMA president, Uche Ojinmah, in a statement said the association received the news of the killing with shock and sadness.
