We salute your adept and muscular discharge of presidential duties during your tenure in the White House. Mr President, as you consider Buhari’s request for military assistance to Nigeria, we respectfully urge you to also consider the following: President Buhari has made Nigeria the most dangerous country in the world for Christians, Jews and Nigeria’s indigenous peoples, particularly those of the former Rep...

43 Million NINs Awaiting NIMC Verification

Telecommunication companies in Nigeria have forwarded at least 43 million National Identity Numbers, NINs, to the National Identity Management Commission for verification in order to have them linked with their respective Subscriber Identification Modules, SIMs. Despite the duration of time given for telephone subscribers with NINs to link it with their SIMs elapsing today (January 19, 2021), service providers have said that SIMs with unlinked submitted NINs would not be blocked. Reports say bout 45 million NINs have been provided by the NIMC, as it was able to register about two million people in the last one month after the Federal Government ordered citizens to register their SIMs with valid NINs, Punch reports. COVID-19 and the Professors – Femi Adesina

I hate to see professors die. And in recent days, we have lost three of them to the strange ailment called COVID-19, currently ravaging the world. Within two weeks, we lost three professors in quick succession. Habu Galadima, Director-General, National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS). Femi Odekunle, renowned criminologist and member of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC). And Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, former Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos. Each time a professor dies, I say to myself: what a waste! All the learning, gone. All the intellect perished. The research, the knowledge, and quest for more knowledge, kaput. Sheer waste! I have firsthand experience in losing a Professor. My elder sister was one. She was a Professor of Dramatic Art...

No One’s Ambition is Worth Blood of Any Citizen, Jonathan Cautions Trump

Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan has urged US President Donald Trump to concede defeat, saying that his ambition is not worth the blood of any American citizen. The American leader has maintained his stance on not conceding defeat after the elections held last year. Jonathan’s call came a just a day after pro-Trump supporters stormed the venue of the joint congress proceeding to assess Joe Biden’s victory. He said, it is never too late to reject the venom and allow the wish of the people for the sake of peace. Hundreds of Republicans invade the US Capitol on Wednesday when lawmakers were certifying the outcome of the recent presidential election in which Trump lost to Biden. Inspired by Trump’s insistence that the poll was rigged, the protesters disrupted the p...

2021: Year to Calm Down, and Wail Less – Femi Adesina

When the year 2020 popped out of the womb of time, nobody knew that it was going to be what Yoruba people call Ogbologbo. Rough and tough. Unpredictable. Hungry and angry, consuming anything and everything it could lay its jaws on. Across America, Europe, Asia, Africa, indeed, all continents, time, like an ever-rolling stream, has been bearing its sons and daughters away. They fly forgotten as a dream dies at the opening day. And who or what is the Grim Reaper? It is called a pandemic. COVID-19. Like President Muhammadu Buhari often says, “you can’t see it, you can’t hear it, you can’t smell or touch it, yet it is there, wreaking havoc all over the world.” COVID-19 is a Great Leveler. It has removed dichotomies between the First World and the Third World. Every country, no matter ...

Former Pension Reform Taskforce Head, Maina, Collapses in Court

Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Team, collapsed in the dock during the resumed hearing in his N2bn money laundering trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday. The sitting was scheduled for the hearing of Maina’s no-case submission, following the close of the prosecution’s case with nine witnessed earlier on Wednesday. A loud sound of Maina’s fall drew attention when his counsel, Anayo Adibe was briefing the judge, Justice Okong Abang, that his team had yet to receive the records of proceedings requested from the court’s registry. Prison officials hastily rushed to attend to him. The presiding judge, Justice Abang said the court would rise for about five minutes.
