Biafra: Sit-At-Home Order Paralysis South-East States

In celebration of this year's Biafra day on May 30th, Biafra agitators staged a sit-at-home protest which was said to have recorded about 95% compliance. The decision to stage sit-at-home protests to mark Biafra celebration day started last year as a result of the clamp down by Nigerian authorities on their non-violent street protests. According to Amnesty International, hundreds of unarmed protesters have been killed by the nation's security operatives at several peaceful protests. With the current sit-at-home protests, no violence is recorded and no lives are lost. The government is however not happy about the success these protests keep recording. According to Evang. Elliot Ugochukwu-Uko, founder, Igbo Youth Movement (IYM) and deputy secretary, Igbo Leaders of Thought, the p...

Following the outrage, the choirmaster of the school said he was proud of their performance. According to him, "We are proud of our Xhosa tradition. We are proud of 'inkciyo'. We are proud of Xhosa women and girls." However, the basic education minister sees it differently. She described it as an "indignity [which] goes against the values of our cultures". Burkina Faso: Death Penalty Abolished in Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso has joined the league of nations to have abolished the death penalty. According to Rene Bagoro, Burkina Faso's Justice Minister, the newly adopted penal code will promote a "more credible, equitable, accessible and effective justice in the application of criminal law. The local media however believe that the move is not unconnected with the administration's desire to have the brother of former President Blaise Compaore, extradited from France to face the murder charges against him. Francois Compaore is currently being held by French authorities. He was implicated in the murder of investigative journalist, Norbert Zonga and then fled to Ivory Coast where he was apprehended by French authorities. Nigeria: PDP To Buhari – Not Too Young To Run is PDP Initiative

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lampoons President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for attempting to parade themselves as the architects of the ‘Not Too Young to Run Act, which was sponsored and pursued by the PDP members in the National Assembly and state houses of assembly. President Buhari had no input whatsoever in the bill; never showed any support or enthusiasm towards the initiative but had no option than to perform a mandatory statutory duty of assenting to the bill, given that it had already passed through the constitutionally required approval of two-third of states in the federation. This development is indeed a democratic victory for the Nigerian youths over forces, particularly, the All Progressives Congress (APC), that had hitherto disdained ...

Biafra: Another Successful Quasi Referendum – Evang. Elliot

Again, our people have spoken with one voice in completely paralyzing our region by staying at home yesterday in demonstration to the world, where we stand. Despite intimidations, harassment and threats from certain quarters, our people resolutely stayed indoors yesterday. We commend our people, for standing on the truth. This is particularly interesting, because, in spite of the spirited effort by government apparatchik to pervert the truth through inducement and blackmail. We congratulate the people of Eastern Nigeria. Government owned media reports hundred percent compliance in Aba, Nnewi, Onitsha, etc and over 70% compliance in other areas, the people have spoken. One year ago, after another successful sit at home, some people issued quit notice, mounted pressure, which led to un...
