Court Sentences Ex-Burkina Faso President to Life Imprisonment

A military court in Burkina Faso on Wednesday sentenced former president Blaise Campare to life imprisonment for the murder of his predecessor Thomas Sankara in a coup. The long-awaited verdict brought to close, a six-month trial about the murder of Mr Sankara, who was assassinated during a coup led by his friend and comrade-in-arms, Mr Compaoré, on October 15, 1987. Thomas Sankara Military prosecutors in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou, had requested a 30-year sentence for Mr Compaoré, who was being tried alongside 13 others. Two other main suspects were also handed life imprisonment sentences. Court Strikes Out Kyari’s Suit Against NDLEA

A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Thursday, dismissed a fundamental enforcement rights suit filed by suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, against the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. Justice Inyang Ekwo dismissed the suit after counsel for the NDLEA, Joseph Sunday, prayed the court that the matter be struck out. When the matter was called, Cynthia Ikena, lawyer to Kyari, was absent. Sunday, NDLEA’s Director of Prosecution and Legal Services, urged the court to strike out the suit. Justice Ekwo said he was informed that Ikena sent a letter, praying the court for an adjournment. But the letter was not filed by the lawyer and therefore not in compliance with the court rule. Ayade: PDP To Appeal High Court Judgement

PDP The opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Cross River State has said they will proceed to appeal the judgment delivered yesterday by an Abuja High Court, in favour of Governor Ben Ayade. An indication was given that the PDP will pursue the matter up to the Supreme Court. In a statement released early Friday morning and signed by its Chairman, Vena Ikem, the party said proceeding to the Appeal Court would remain “a civilized struggle and an intellectual exploration of the limits and vastness of our jurisprudence in this untested territory.” The party said they will not rest until they get justice. FCT High Court The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Thursday, dismissed the suit the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, filed to declare the seat of Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State and his Deputy, Ivara Esu, vacant, following their defection to the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC. The court, in a judgement that was delivered by Justice Taiwo Taiwo, held that the duo could not be sacked from their positions, other than through statutory procedures that were stipulated in sections 180, 188 and 189 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended. The Independent  National Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday, asked the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to dismiss the suit the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, filed seeking to declare the seat of Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State and his Deputy, Ivara Esu, vacant, following their defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress,  APC. Court Orders Transfer Of DCP Abba Kyari, 6 Others To Prison Custody

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Monday, ordered the transfer of the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, Abba Kyari, and six others that are facing drug trafficking charges with him, to the Kuje Correctional Center Trial Justice Emeka Nwike ordered the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, to transfer the Defendants to prison custody, shortly after he denied them bail.
