Burkina Faso: Death Penalty Abolished in Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso has joined the league of nations to have abolished the death penalty. According to Rene Bagoro, Burkina Faso's Justice Minister, the newly adopted penal code will promote a "more credible, equitable, accessible and effective justice in the application of criminal law. The local media however believe that the move is not unconnected with the administration's desire to have the brother of former President Blaise Compaore, extradited from France to face the murder charges against him. Francois Compaore is currently being held by French authorities. He was implicated in the murder of investigative journalist, Norbert Zonga and then fled to Ivory Coast where he was apprehended by French authorities. The change in the penal code paves way for the the extradition request to ...

Nigeria: PDP To Buhari – Not Too Young To Run is PDP Initiative

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lampoons President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for attempting to parade themselves as the architects of the ‘Not Too Young to Run Act, which was sponsored and pursued by the PDP members in the National Assembly and state houses of assembly. President Buhari had no input whatsoever in the bill; never showed any support or enthusiasm towards the initiative but had no option than to perform a mandatory statutory duty of assenting to the bill, given that it had already passed through the constitutionally required approval of two-third of states in the federation. This development is indeed a democratic victory for the Nigerian youths over forces, particularly, the All Progressives Congress (APC), that had hitherto disdained ...

World: Pope Francis Requests Roman Catholic Priests Be Given the Right to Get Married

Pope Francis has requested that Roman Catholic priests be given the right to get married. The request applies to priests in Brazil, and is on the agenda for an upcoming synod (church council) in the Amazon region. The controversial move would address the critical shortage of men joining the priesthood – but is likely to drive divisions through the church by enraging conservative factions. A small number of married Roman Catholic priests already exist, including previously married Anglican vicars who have joined the church. A request to lift the ban on marriage was made by Brazilian bishop Cardinal Claudio Hummes, who reportedly asked the Pope to consider ‘viri probati’, meaning married of great faith, as priests. Derry priest Father Paddy O’Kane suggested that Pope Francis m...

Boko Haram: Nigeria to Negotiate for Dapchi Schoolgirls’ Release

The Nigerian government says it will negotiate for the release of 110 abducted schoolgirls rather than use military force. The students were seized last month from their school in the town of Dapchi by the militant group Boko Haram. However, the Nigerian authorities know that sending troops and aircraft in pursuit of the jihadists holding the abducted school girls is an extremely risky strategy. President Muhammadu Buhari said the government had chosen negotiation over the military option and Nigeria was working with international organisations and negotiators to ensure that the girls were released unharmed by their captors. Negotiations have been partially successful before. Dozens of the Chibok school girls were freed in exchange for the release of Boko Haram prisoners. The g...

Nigeria: IGP Disobeyed Buhari’s Order to Stay In benue

Following President Muhammadu Buhari's declaration on Monday that he was not aware that the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, ignored his instruction to relocate to Benue State during the crisis in the state, it is clear that the IGP disobeyed a direct order from his commander in chief. President Buhari made public his ignorance of the action of the IGP at a meeting with stakeholders in Makurdi, during his visit to Benue State. Shortly after 73 persons were killed in January following clashes between farmers and herdsmen, Buhari had asked Idris to relocate to Benue. But during the meeting with stakeholders, Buhari was told that Idris did not spend up to 24 hours in the state. Buhari, who expressed shock, explained that he did the needful by ordering the IG to relocate...
