JOHESU Suspends Seven-day Strike

Nigerian health workers have announced suspension of its industrial action which it embarked upon seven days ago. The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), umbrella body for the health workers asked members to resume duty on Monday, September 21. The body embarked on strike on September 14, demanding for improved welfare and payment of COVID-19 special inducement and hazard allowances, adjustment of Consolidated Medical Salary Structure since 2014, among other demands. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has announced governor Godwin Obaseki as the winner of Edo State governorship election held on Saturday. The victory meant Obaseki has secured a second term in office after seeing off contest from his opponents with a wide margin. INEC disclosed Obaseki’s victory on Sunday afternoon after he polled the highest number of votes in the Edo election. Obaseki who contested the election under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, defeated his closest opponent, Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressive Congress with a difference of 84,336 votes.

The Emir of Zazzau,  Alhaji Idris, is dead. He passed on at the age of 84 in the early hours of Monday. A family source who spoke to Sahara Reporters said, “It is confirmed. He had some health issue on Friday and was taken to hospital where he died. His body would soon be transported to Zaria for burial.” He was the 18th Fulani Emir of Zazzau.

Edo Decides: Obaseki in Early Lead as INEC Announces Results from 14 Local Government Areas

Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governor Godwin Obaseki has garnered the most vote cast in 14 local government areas as INEC continues announcement of results for the Edo State governorship election. Obaseki is leading his closes rival, Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the opposition All Progressive Congress. Results from 14 local government areas announced so far by the Independent National Electoral Commission show that Obaseki scored a total of 254,169 while Ize-Iyamu polled 163,429. Results from the remaining eight LGAs will determine the ultimate winner of the keenly contested election. The Peoples Democratic Party has accused the All Progressive Congress of mounting pressure on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to change result of the Edo State governorship election. The All Progressive Congress (APC) flag bearer in the Edo State gubernatorial election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu defeated won the polling unit of the immediate former National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole with a land slide margin.
