Polytechnic Lecturers begin Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has commenced an indefinite strike with effect from today. The union said this followed the failure of the government to address the sorry state of polytechnics and monotechnics and the expiration of the ultimatum issued since March 2020. The action is coming less than a week after resident doctors embarked on a nationwide strike over non-payment of allowances and other issues. The authorities of University of Benin, on Wednesday, announced the suspension of members of the three arms of Students’ Union Government in the institution. The institution’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Dr Benedicta Ehanire, in a statement issued in Benin, said that a caretaker committee would be put in place to manage the affairs of the union. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Friday said security reasons and checkmating examination malpractice informed its decision to introduce the use of the National Identity Number, NIN, for the registration of the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. The examination body noted that the directive was issued by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu. Adamawa Polytechnic Shut Indefinitely

The management of Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola has announced the indefinite closure of the institution after final-year students went berserk. The irate students destroyed the institution’s 500-seater lecture theatre, burnt the Students’ Union Government building and also destroyed the Students’ Union’s president’s vehicle. Abduction: Negotiate with Bandits Now, Parents Beg El-Rufai

Following the failure of government and security agencies to secure the release of the 39 abducted students of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation in the Mando Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, their parents have appealed to the Governor Nasir El-Rufai to bargain with the bandits to safely secure their release.  The female students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, who were kidnapped in front of their hostel in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, have been released by the gunmen. The students were freed on Tuesday night but it could not be ascertained if any ransom was paid to secure their release. The Federal Government has asked Nigerians to be vigilant to mitigate against attacks on schools and students’ abduction. Auchi Polytechnic Bans Students From Driving Private Cars

The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State, has banned students from driving private cars on campus. This was contained in a circular signed by its Registrar. According to the circular stated, the measure followed “intelligence reports” received by the institution’s management.
