Rape in Nigeria: Police, NHRC, NAPTIP Advocate Accelerated Hearing Of Rape Cases

A joint statement by the Police, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has called for accelerated hearing of rape cases in Nigeria. This comes on the back of several rape charges in the country. The call was made in a statement issued after a meeting by the organisations at the Force Headquarters on Saturday in Abuja, Nigeria. Ilaro Polytechnic Management  has suspended the Students Union, President, Adegboye Olatunji, who was arrested for engaging in cult activities. The young man was nabbed alongside another cult member, Olarewaju Taiwo, in the full regalia of the black axe cult during initiation of new members of the group. The duo were arrested following a tip off to the police by members of the public. The group were allegedly sighted in a bush at Gbogidi area of Ilaro where they were trying to initiate new members. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Friday arrested 18 (Eighteen) suspected internet fraudsters in Alagbado area of Lagos State. The suspects are:  Abass Mukhtar, Enitan Adekunle, Olakunle Araoyinbo, Korede Adetule, Christmas Gabriel, Christmas Yole, Christmas Emmanuel and Harrison Obayogbono. Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) has concluded a two-day workshop to strengthen the capacity of religious institutions to respond to domestic violence as it remains a punishable crime in the state. The event held at Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja was organised in collaboration with the European Union (EU)-funded Rule of Law and Anti Collaboration Programme and Nigeria Policing Programme, was aimed at sensitising religious organisations and ensuring adequate response to complaints of sexual and gender-based violence in the State. On 14th August, 2019, a team of detectives from the Gender Unit, Command’s Headquarters Ikeja, arrested one Onyinye Mbadike ‘f’ 24yrs of No 7 Trimnell Street, Aguda for assault and child abuse. This followed a viral video on the social media showing the suspect torturing one Chibike EziAmaka ‘m’ 10years old of same address. The video also showed the suspect locking the boy up in a dog’s kennel, sharing space with dogs. The video was widely condemned by well meaning Nigerians. Nigeria: EFCC Arrests Youth Corps member, NAU Graduate for Internet Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos Zonal office, has arrested the duo of Ademola Babajide Adeniyi, a serving youth corps member, and Onabuke Adedokun Kenny, a graduate of the North American University, for alleged Internet fraud. The suspects were arrested on July 30, 2019 at Novojo Estate, Sangotedo Ajah, Lagos, during a raid by operatives of the EFCC. In his statement to the EFCC, the first suspect, Adeniyi, stated that he collected six iphone 8 and 4 Apple laptops from his unsuspecting victims, which he sold for over N1m (One Million Naira). Items found on the suspects at the point of arrest include laptops, scam emails, pictures of some female victims, phones and a 2015 Honda Accord car.
