Nigeria: President Buhari Returns After 15 Days

President Buhari has returned to the country after spending about 15 days on his 10 day vacation to the UK. It will be recalled that President Buhari left Nigeria on the 3rd of August on what was called a 10-day vacation. It was therefore expected that he will return by the 13th. His failure to return at the expected time started generating rumours regarding the actual reason for his visit to the UK and the state of his health. Announcing his return this evening, Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, wrote on his Facebook page "President Buhari returns to Abuja after 10 working days holiday to an enthusiastic reception from Nigerians on 18th August 2018"

Africa: Kofi Annan Passes On at 80

Koffi Annan, former United Nations Secretary-General, has passed on at the age of 80. His death was announced in a tweet from his Twitter account @KofiAnnan. The tweet read "It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness." Kofi Annan passed on in Switzerland and his family has requested that some privacy be accorded them as they mourn the passing of their father and the Nobel Peace Prize winner. They however promised to announce arrangements for his burial later.

Nigeria's ace winger and Chelsea player Victor Moses has announced his retirement from international football. Moses who will turn 28 in December says he has had his best times wearing the Nigerian green and white colors. In a statement he released on Twitter, Victor Moses said he felt it was time for him to leave the stage so the younger players can step up and shine. He also said he wants to focus on club football as well as his young family. Breaking News: Osinbajo Sacks DSS Chief

The Nigerian Acting President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has dismissed the Director General of the DSS. Mr. Lawal Musa Daura. The news was broken a few moments ago by the Senior Special Assistant-Media and Publicity to the Vice President Laolu Akande. In a tweet posted this afternoon, Mr Akande said "AgP Yemi Osinbajo has directed the termination of the appointment of the DG of the DSS, Mr. Lawal Musa Daura. Mr. Daura has been directed to hand over to the most senior officer of the State Security Service until further notice." This may not be unconnected with the incident this morning where the DSS laid siege on the National Assembly complex, preventing honorable members and their staff from gaining access. We shall provide more details as they emerge.

The Deputy House Minority Leader, Hon. Onyema Chukwuka has declared that some Senators were planning to break into the Senate chambers. He stated this in a video interview which he granted while on what he called a vigil at the National Assembly Complex. Senator Chukwuka alleged that they had it on good authority that some APC Senators led by Ali Senators Ndume, Senator Adamu Abdullahi and Senator Omo-Agege. Nigeria: Bukola Saraki’s Convoy Blocked by the Police

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, this morning had his convoy intercepted and blocked by the Nigerian Police. He was on his way to honour the invitation extended to him by the Police to appear before it this morning by 8am. The Senate President had last night released a statement indicating that the Police sent a letter to him by 8pm, requesting that he reports to the Force Headquarters by 8am this morning. It is therefore not clear at this time why his convoy was blocked on his way to honour the invitation. Nigeria: All these Concoctions and Evil Plots Cannot Deter Me – Saraki

Reacting to the letter again sent to him by the Police this night, inviting him to appear by 8am tomorrow (24th July 2018), Senate President, Bukola Saraki has said among other things that the concoctions and evil plots will not deter him. In a statement released on his Facebook page, he noted that the Police had corrupted and politicized their investigations into the Offa robbery incident. He said "They have turned it into an instrument for the party in power to suppress perceived opponents, witch hunt issue for blackmailing people from freely choosing which platform on which they want to pursue their ambitions and a matter for harassing the people whose exit from APC would harm the chances of the party in the forthcoming elections."
