The Super Falcons of Nigeria lost 0-1 to the Copper Queens of Zambia in the third-place match of the WAFCON 2022 on Friday in Morocco.
The Zambian side claimed the Bronze medal courtesy of an own goal by Chiamaka Nnadozie in the first half of the encounter. The medal marked Zambia’s first ever medal.
The Falcons had only finished fourth at the WAFCON in the 2012 edition.
Zambia got their goal in the 29 minutes when Evarine Katongo’s long range shot came off Nnadozie after it initially hit the post and deflected into the net.
The Falcons suffered more injury woe when Ucheibe was substituted through injury in the 34th minute. She was replaced by Chikwelu.
Although there were chances to equalize, the Nigerian side never really got it across the line.
Falcons came to the competition expecting to clinch a tenth WAFCON title but will settle for a fourth place finish and a place at the FIFA World Cup.
