Iconic Nigerian forward, Daniel Amoachi has said that the Super Eagles would have been crowned the African Champions at the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations if the current Video Assistant Referee, VAR, was in use at the time.
Amokachi said this while reflecting on the 200 AFCON match where Victor Ikpeba’s penalty kick during penalty shootout against Cameroon was incorrectly ruled out.
Tunisian referee Morad Daami did not award the goal despite replays showing the penalty had crossed the line.
It allowed Cameroon to win the match 4-3 on penalties.
Speaking on whether he would have welcomed VAR during his professional career, Amokachi, speaking in Monday’s edition of his radio programme ‘Bull’s Pit’ on Brila FM replied:”I would have welcomed VAR during my playing days because with VAR we would have won the AFCON 2000.”
Responding to who he feels should lead the Eagles attack in case Victor Osimhen is not available, the 1994 AFCON and 1996 Olympic gold medal winner said:”Paul Onuachu has more better chance to spearhead the attack for Nigeria. He’s the only one and that’s if the coaching crew know how to use him.
“What Onuachu is experiencing in the Super Eagles was what Victor Agali faced during his time in the Team, we didn’t use him well. He was scoring goals when he was in Germany but the pattern of play in the Eagles did not suit him.”
