In an amazing result, the Sao Tome vs Nigeria match ended in a huge 10 goals to nil score in favour of Nigeria. Though the Nigerian Super Eagles were indeed expected to win, no one envisaged such a huge margin.
The team, which appeared to be struggling to find its footing under the new coach, Jose Peseiro had earlier struggled to win Sierra Lone by 2 goals to 1 in Nigeria. Nigerians were therefore not sure what to expect.
The flood gates was opened in the 9th minute by Victor Osimhen who nodded in from a well worked cross from the left flank by Moses Simon.
In the 28th minute, Osimhen reciprocated the earlier assist from Moses Simon when he steered a cross from Ola Aina towards Simon who simply tapped it in for the second goal.
Terrem Moffi concluded the first half goals with his first goal for the Super Eagles. Her deftly took a defender out of the picture and then shut the ball in the corner.
The second half started with much of the same one-way traffic. Osimhen got his second goal when Oghenekaro Etebo crossed into the box to Ademola Lookman who then lobbed from the right into the box for a strong headed tap in from Victor Osimhen.
Etebo got himself on the scorers’ list when he converted a freekick from just outside the box in the 55th minute.
The Super Eagles showed no signs of slowing down as they quickly netted 3 goals over the next 10 minutes. Moffi got his second in the 60th minute, quickly followed by Ademola Lookman’s first in the 63rd minute and Osimhen’s hattrick in the 65th minute. With the 25 minutes to the end of the match, the Nigerian Super Eagles led by 8 goals to nil.
The Nigerian team resumed scoring in the 84th minute when Osimhen got his 4th goal. He got on to a through pass from Ahmed Musa and chipped the goalkeeper to take the goal tally to 9.
The goal fest ended with an extra time goal from Emmanuel Denis. He won a penalty 2 minutes into stoppage time and converted it smoothly.
Nigeria’s next matches in the AFCON qualifiers will be at home on the 19th of September 2022 against Guinea-Bissau and the reverse fixture at Guinea-Bissau on the 27th of September 2022.
