The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has taken the immediate past governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed into custody.

Reports say a crack team of the commission is grilling the former governor at the EFCC headquarters located at Jabi, Abuja, a source told Channels Television.

Ahmed reportedly arrived at the EFCC headquarters at about 10am on Monday in responses to the invitation issued to him by the anti-graft agency.

While details of the case were still sketchy as of press time, sources revealed that his arrest was in connection with how funds to the tune of about N9 billion were allegedly diverted from the coffers of the Kwara State government.

The money was alleged to have been diverted during Mr Ahmed’s tenure as governor of the state and when he served as the Commissioner for Finance in the administration of former Governor Bukola Saraki.

His presence at the commission was acknowledged by a spokesman for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, who confirmed that the former governor responded to the commission’s invitation.

Uwajaren, however, refused to offer details.

Ahmed was appointed as the Commissioner for Finance in Kwara after Saraki assumed office as governor in 2003.

He also served as the treasurer of the Forum of Commissioners of Finance in Nigeria and the Chairman of the Budget Formulation Committee and Economic Team of Kwara State.

Ahmed was succeeded by the incumbent governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazag in 2019 after spending two terms in office under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
