Anti-graft agency in Tanzania has cautioned businessmen in the country against sponsoring politicians vying for elective positions as the east African nation gets ready for its general election in October.
Director general of anti-corruption agency, Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau, John Mbungo asked businessmen to desist from sponsoring political office seekers during the forthcoming election.
Mbungo in a meeting of election stakeholders held in Dar es-Salaam, to discuss ways of curbing corruption ahead of the October polls said, “Businessmen financing politicians during elections are with the intention of getting favours from the government when the politicians get leadership positions.”
“There are politicians seeking elective posts that are financed by wealthy people, and after the elections the politicians have to repay by favoring their financiers by offering them hefty business deals,” said Mbungo, adding that wealthy politicians bribing voters was also not allowed by laws of the country.
The National Electoral Commission reports that out of the 57 million Tanzanians, over 29 million have registered to vote in this year’s elections, compared to about 23 million voters registered in 2015.
