Nigeria: Okorie Drags Zenith Bank to CBN Over ‘Disappearance’ of $64.1 Million

An alleged disappearance of over $64 million from the vaults of the Zenith Bank has landed the multinational financial services provider in trouble. Zenith bank is rated as a large financial service provider in Nigeria and Anglophone West Africa. As at the ending of 2016, her total assets was N4.7 trillion with shareholders’ equity of N616.3 billion. She is listed  on the Nigeria Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange. But the Managing Director of Owigs and Obigs, Emeka Okorie, has dragged the bank before the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over an alleged unethical conduct which resulted in the termination of a foreign business transaction of over $64 million, with a Chinese firm, King-Tan Tantalum Industry. Okorie is praying the apex bank for clarification on the validity of...

Opinion: Forget Onnoghen; Let’s Talk about Buhari’s Asset Declaration Fraud by Farooq Kperogi

Buhari’s asset declaration fraud is more damning than Onnoghen's, yet it is Onnoghen who has been illegally “suspended” and pilloried in the media. In this piece I’ll show you why Buhari is a double-dyed scammer who should be in jail. First, it was Buhari who voluntarily said he would publicly declare his assets. The Punch of February 20, 2015 reported him to have said: “I pledge to PUBLICLY declare my assets and liabilities, encourage all my appointees to publicity declare their assets and liabilities as a pre-condition for appointment.” However, several months after getting into power, he refused to declare his assets publicly. In the early days of the regime, I frantically reached out to many people in the president’s inner circle with whom I have a personal relationship and begge...

Nigeria: Code of Conduct Tribunal Cannot Try Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen

In a reaction from legal practitioners, it is becoming clear that the Code of Conduct Tribunal has no jurisdiction to try the Chief Justice of the Federation. In a post published by a lawyer, the reason for this was explained. The post reads: "Serving judges can’t be tried by cct by virtue of the judgment of the court of appeal in respect of the case of Justice Hyeladzira Nganjiwa, the chief justice of Nigeria and in fact, any serving judicial officer judge, cannot be tried by the code of conduct tribunal or even court, until the national judicial council, NJC would have dealth with the matter. Though, the matter is still on appeal at the supreme court, the judgment still stands. As a matter of fact, based on that judgment, the code of conduct tribunal had to discontinue the trial of...

Opinion: Justice Onnoghen and The Rising Fascism in Nigeria by Achike Chude

In any society that predominantly seeks excellence, it should be standard practice that every infraction, especially those by public officials is investigated. It is therefore expected that every action carried out by government towards sanitizing the polity should be upheld and applauded by the public because everybody ultimately benefits. This should naturally be our disposition over this Onnoghen matter - to support the action of the federal government to bring Onnoghen to book if he is culpable. This would be especially so if this government is all about probity, accountability, transparency and integrity. But this is a government that provides accommodation and refuge to Obanikoro, Orji Kalu, Akpabio, Tinubu, Oshiomole, etc. This is a government that accommodated Maina and the suspend...

Nigeria: The Charge and Planned Arraignment of the Hon. Chief Justice Onoghen

Our attention has been drawn to the trending news that the Hon. Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onoghen has been charged before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, based on a petition submitted to the Code of Conduct Bureau on Wednesday the 9th of January, 2019, and is to be arraigned before the Tribunal on Monday , the 14th January, 2019. The prosecutorial decision that has been taken by the Executive Branch of Government ( FGN / FRN) is a very grave one. It is unprecedented in the political history of Nigeria. Let us go down memory lane. During  the blistering General Murtala Muhammed Military Regime, in 1975,  there were massive purges in the Judiciary as well as in the public service. Many public servants were removed “ with immediate effect” . During the purges , a sitting Chief Justice...

Nigeria: Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Onnoghen, to be Arraigned at CCT Monday

The Federal Government has asked the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen, to immediately vacate his exalted office as head of the nation’s judiciary over alleged sundry asset declaration issues. In a move to force Justice Onnoghen out of office, the Federal Government will on Monday January 14 arraign the CJN before the Justice Danladi Yakubu led-Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, in Abuja on charges of failures to declare his assets as required by law and for operating Bank Domiciliary Foreign Currency Accounts. The charge sighted by PRNigeria against Justice Onnoghen has already being filed and served on him last Friday at his official residence in Abuja preparatory for his appearance at the tribunal. The Federal Government among others is accusing Nigeria’s Head of the J...

Nigeria: Amina Zakari is Lying About her Relationship with Buhari by Farooq Kperogi

Mrs. Amina Zakari just said to the BBC, “I’m not [Buhari’s] niece.” That’s flat-out mendacious. And it puts a huge question mark on her honesty, probity, and trustworthiness. A person who can lie this casually about something as basic and as verifiable as her relationships is disreputable and unworthy of the responsibility she's been entrusted with at INEC. So what is the truth? In a December 27, 2018 article, Mohammed Haruna, former Daily Trust columnist and current INEC commissioner, confirmed that President Muhammadu Buhari’s biological sister was once married to Mrs. Amina Zakari’s father. That makes Amina Buhari’s niece. This is the definition of a niece in the Oxford English Dictionary: “A daughter of one's brother or sister, or of one's brother-in-law or sister-in-law.” Amina...

Nigeria: Should Buhari probe the Power Sector, OBJ Won’t Escape Prosecution – Oshiomole

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, on Friday said former President Olusegun Obasanjo would not escape prosecution if President Muhammadu Buhari decides to probe the power sector. The former governor of Edo State spoke in Jos during the opening of Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong’s reelection campaign at the Rwang Pam Stadium. He said, “Obasanjo said in 1999 that if he was elected President with his Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, he would fix the power sector in six months and that there would be electricity supply all over Nigeria. Many years later, we realised what he meant. “He and his Vice-President spent $16bn on power sector, after eight years there was more darkness in Nigeria than when they assumed office. So when President Muha...

Nigeria: How Buhari’s Ally, Isa Funtua, Fraudulently Acquired KeyStone Bank and 9Mobile

How Isa Funtua fraudulently acquired KeyStone Bank and 9Mobile using AMCON MD Recently, a shocking story came out to public knowledge about how Keystone Bank and 9Mobile were acquired in controversial circumstances by the business interests of one Alhaji Isa Funtua, a close friend of President Muhammadu Buhari, via the instrumentality of Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON). As the smoke raised by the scandalous story is still swirling in the air, with some public groups challenging the government to come out clean on what could be a serious dent on its anti-corruption stance, there is indeed no smoke without fire. For starters, it is a confirmed fact that the son-in-law of Isa Funtua, Ahmed Kuru, is the current CEO of AMCON. Before him, the previous CEO, Chike Obi, was a fi...

...Army chief Buratai implores the media to take it easy and not pursue "negative" stories about it. Last week Army spokesman, Lt. Col SK Usman, at the behest of Army chief Buratai, invited 40 journalists, so many editors, to Maiduguri. All expenses paid. It was a meeting that had two phases. He met with Heads of NGOs and officials of UN agencies in the NE. The theme for the media? To implore the media to take it easy and not pursue "negative" stories about how the military high command are stashed funds meant for soldiers, allowing them die like hens when in combat with Boko. One of those they accuse was Babajide Otitoju of TVC. Usman personally accused him of " demoralizing" troops.  Babajide was there at  the diner and got his share took photos with d boss and promised to take it ea...
