Court Fixes February 19 For Judgment On Saraki’s Ikoyi Houses

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos presided by Justice Muhammed Liman has fixed February 19, 2021, for ruling in a suit filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for the total and final forfeiture of two properties belonging to the former Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki. The decision to fix the date was reached on Tuesday after al parties adopted and argued their final written addresses. The former Senate President, who was also a two-term governor of Kwara State, is being scrutinized by the EFCC which claimed that Saraki withdrew over N12 billion cash from the account of the Kwara government and deposited same into his personal accounts through one of his aides, Abdul Adama while serving as governor between 2003 and 2011. FG Grants Plateau Govt NIN registration Licence 

The Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong has said he has secured a registration licence for the State Government to commence the enrollment of National Identity Number, NIN, for residents of the state to alleviate the suffering occasioned by few enrolment centres. This was contained in a statement on Sunday by the governor’s director of Press and Public Affairs, Macham Makut, who said the licence granted by the Federal Government is for one year and it is subject to renewal upon satisfactory performance during the period. Supreme Court Rejects Request to Unfreeze Abacha’s Accounts in UK, others

The Supreme Court, on Friday, declined the request by a brother to the late Gen. Sani Abacha, Alhaji Ali Abacha, to unfreeze the accounts traced to him and relatives of the late Head of State in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Jersey, Liechtenstein, and Luxembourg. The apex court in a unanimous judgment of a five-man panel led by Justice Sylvester Ngwuta held that Ali Abacha’s case was statute-barred as at when it was commenced in April 2004 at the Federal High Court in Kaduna State. Zambia President Fires Health Minister Chilufya

Zambia’s presidency on Sunday announced the sacking of the country’s health minister, arrested for alleged graft last year but cleared of charges. Chitalu Chilufya, 48, was held in June following accusations he used ill-gotten gains to acquire property. A court cleared him of the charges in August due to lack of evidence and he resumed his duties. We’ll Clampdown on People With Fake COVID-19 Certificates – Lagos Health Commissioner

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi has stated that the Ministry has observed that people have begun to have access to fake Covid-19 certificates, promising to clampdown on such people. He gave this warning at an ongoing press briefing at the Ministry of Health in Lagos on Monday. “We suspect people are gaining access to fake certificates and we will clampdown on them as this is a very dangerous trend.” Abayomi also added that Lagos residents who have tested positive have been observed to give fake contacts and phone numbers at the isolation facilities, making contact tracing difficult.

The United Kingdom has distanced itself from the indictment of former Nigerian Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, by a member of its parliament, Tom Tugendhat. The UK lawmaker had on November 23, accused Gowon of looting half the Central Bank of Nigeria while he was the head of state. Court Declines Maina’s Adjournment Request

A Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected the request by Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reformed Task Team, for an adjournment to prepare for his defence. The preceding judge, Justice Okon Abang held that the request was intended to waste the judicial time of the court. Justice Abang had on December 4, 2020, adjourned the N2bn money laundering case till Tuesday (today) based on a request by Maina’s new lawyer, Mr Adaji Abel, who solicited for more time to enable him to prepare for the case. Court Orders Maina’s Arrest, Trial in Absentia

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the arrest of the former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reformed Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, adjudged to have jumped bail regarding his trial involving N2bn money laundering charges. Justice Okon Abang made the order in Wednesday’s ruling in which he also revoked the bail earlier granted the fleeing defendant. He ordered all security agencies in the country to arrest Maina “wherever he may be found” and produce him in court, “without delay”. The judge also ordered that the defendant’s trial would proceed in his absence pending when the defendant would be produced in court.
