Why Nigerian Traders Must Go – Ghanaian Traders

The Ghana Union of Traders Association, GUTA, at Kasao in the Central region has warned it would shut down shops of foreigners, especially Nigerians, involved in retail business in the area. The group cited the inimical impact of foreigners engaged in retail business on local sellers as the rationale for the threat. According to the General Secretary of GUTA at Kasoa, Bright Agyemang, in his interaction with journalists expressed worry over the government's inability to enforce the laws on foreign businesses in Ghana. Ghana Traders Union Oppose Call to Reopen Nigerians’ Shops

Following calls by some Nigerian traders for their shops to be reopened after months of lockdown, the Ashanti regional branch of the Ghana Union of Traders Association, GUTA, has urged President Akufo-Addo to disregard such clamour. Recall that there has been friction between Ghanaian traders and their counterparts from other countries, especially Nigerians. The Ghana Immigration Service, GIS, has expressed readiness to prevent Nigerian jailbreakers from entering the country. To this effect, Kwame Asuah Takyi, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, has directed all Border Control Commanders to be on high-security alert to prevent them from entering Ghana. Ghana Cedi Ranked Best Currency in Africa

Ghana’s legal tender has been ranked the best performing currency in Africa for the first quarter of 2021. It appreciated at 0.6 per cent to the US dollar, bettering some other prevalent 15 currencies in Africa. Among the currencies are the Egyptian pound, Nigerian naira and the South African rand, Ghanaweb reports. Nigerian Arrested for Obtaining Ghanaian Passport

A 28-year-old Nigerian man has been repatriated by the Kaneshie District Court for illegally acquiring a Ghanaian passport and birth certificate. The man identified as Iyamu, aka Anthony Kwarteng, had acquired a Ghanaian passport in Spain through a friend but the passport got missing when he paid a visit to Nigeria. He was arrested by the Ghana Immigration Service, GIS, while attempting to secure a new Ghanaian Passport at the Passport Application Centre, PAC, at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Accra. Ghana to Receive World’s First Doses of Free Covax Vaccines -UNICEF

Ghana is scheduled to receive Wednesday the first shipment of Covid-19 vaccines from Covax, a World Health Organization-backed effort to procure and distribute inoculations for free to poor countries. “These 600,000 Covax vaccines are part of an initial tranche of deliveries of the AstraZeneca / Oxford vaccine licensed to the Serum Institute of India, which represent part of the first wave of Covid vaccines headed to several low and middle-income countries,” said UNICEF, which organised the shipment from Mumbai, in a joint statement with the WHO. The Golden Eaglets of Nigeria have secured a semi-finals qualification at the U-17 WAFU Zone B qualifiers in Lome, Togo.
